Trailers.app on Apple TV 2, what am I doing wrong?

I'm not a computer novice by any means but I followed the directions here http://langui.sh/2013/08/27/appletv-ssl-plexconnect/ to update Trailers.app.  I turned on the server as per instructions but when I opened Trailers I see only trailers.

What am I doing wrong or what am I missing?  I have an AppleTV 2 with software version 6.0.0.

Did you changed your DNS settings and add the certificate at the ATV?

Thanks don.chulio.   I did add the certificate to the Apple TV as instructed and was told it was successful but I had not changed the DNS for it.

I'm a software guy and not a networking guy so I kind of screwed it up and lost connection.  I set a rule on my (frontier) router to forward Apple TV traffic to port 53.  I then manually configured my Apple TVs DNS to point to that IP address.  When I did that, I was unable to acccess iTunes store, Netflix, Hulu...

There's a lot of information out there, is there any sort of (almost) definitive guide about port forwarding?

BTW, when running Plex on my computer it looks like in th start up sequece it is forwarding:

15:15:34 DNSServer: DNSServer: Serving DNS on <> port 53.
15:15:34 DNSServer: intercept: ['trailers.apple.com'] => <>
15:15:34 DNSServer: restrain: ['mesu.apple.com', 'appldnld.apple.com', 'appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net'] => 127.0.0.1

Shut port 53 on your router!

If you read the sticky and provide the info requested I am sure we can get you up and running.

You don't need to port forward anything.

The "hardest" part is actually the certificate. I see you've done that, now all you gotto do is start plexconnect on a machine and on the Apple TV point DNS to that particular machine (which is running PlexConnect).

Presto, you're done. If you're on LAN* you can see your PMS content under library, otherwise (remote) it's under myPlex....

* as long as you don't have "Require authentication on local networks" turned on.

FreakNL, thanks ... I think I understand but want to clarify.

"... on the Apple TV point DNS to that particular machine" so I would point my apple TV to the machine's IP?

   If Apple TV is 1.1.1.1 and the machine running Plex is 1.1.1.2 then I'd change the DNS on Apple TV to be 1.1.1.2 and everything else will still work OK?

Yes that is correct.

If you are using your Atv locally you don't need to open any ports. If you are using your Atv remotely you don't need to open any ports if you are using myplex. If you are using a different method remotely besides myplex you would need to open your pms port also if you would like to use plexweb that pms port is required to be open as well. There is other methods as well that open other ports but to keep things as simple as possible and if you are using it locally just keep all your plex related ports closed on your router ;)

Thank you for all the help... I got to Plex from Trailers.app but MyPlex is empty (Yes, I have 2 videos queued).  If I can figure that out and get it to work well... I'd consider going further with the Plex guys and buying in to the system to help develop further features/functionality.

the myplex tab is for remote servers only.. the que fuction is not avalible yet so it should be empty if u have no shared servers :)

So it sounds like I need to share my server ... which I have downloaded and just need to get it set up so I can watch Media locally.

Thank you for all of the help.

Your server is under "Library", right?

You need to get your Friends sharing their servers... :-D

Thank you for all of the help.  I am up and running and it really is not that difficult, just many pieces in the puzzle that didn't seem in your face at the time I was setting it up.  For future reference to those who might have issues:

In addition to the certs You need to:

  • Point Apple TV DNS to the computer IP address running ./PlexConnect.py.
    • A moment of 'duh' - the computer needs to be on for your Apple TV to work, I'd shut my laptop as I was testing settings, forgetting I was pointing to it.
  • Run Plex Media Server if you have local content.

Now if I can just get to the videos I added via "Plex It!" I will be in great shape.
