Trailers & Extras in Plex Web & Mobile Apps

Hey Guys -

Quick question. My PMS is the latest version for Windows (PlexPass) and I keep my media’s naming and metadata as perfect as possible as I run it though scanners before adding it to the library paths. This includes downloading trailers for each title and naming them the same filename as the movie, but adding “-trailer” to the end.

When using Plex via web browser or a mobile app, I hardly ever see the option to play the trailer for the movie. (To be clear, I’m talking about the trailer for the movie in my library - not random trailers before a movie plays.

I read documentation and also tried adding a folder named “Trailers” inside a couple of movie folders, copying the trailer to it, and renaming it simply to “Trailer1”. A full library update later and still no go. A while back I switched over to using the MediaCenterMaster agent for Movies to try to fix it (as I also scrape my movies with the same app), but it didn’t help either. It’s not that the trailer doesn’t play - there’s no option to view it whatsoever.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

This will only work if:

  • each movie has its own subfolder
  • the trailer is located in this very subfolder, together with its “main” movie
  • there are not several movies (or ‘versions’ of movies) together in the same folder
  • the ‘Local Media Assets’ agent must be active

Media Center Master is a 3rd party agent and was not tested and will probably not support this at all.

Please post the Plex XML info of a movie and a list of all the files in its folder.

Thanks -

Well, I only switched to the MCM agent since I wasn’t getting them with the default agents either. I also meet all of the criteria listed.

Below is what you requested for a single title:

Movie: The Shining (1980)
Path to Movie’s Folder: D:- Media -\Movies\Shining, The [1980] 1080p
Plex XML: Below is a screenshot with the actual text saved to the attached file. I’ve also attached the movie’s nfo and xml file listed below

Folder contents:

  • backdrop1.jpg
  • backdrop10.jpg
  • backdrop11.jpg
  • backdrop12.jpg
  • backdrop13.jpg
  • backdrop2.jpg
  • backdrop3.jpg
  • backdrop4.jpg

  • banner.jpg
  • clearart.png
  • disc.png
  • fanart.jpg
  • folder.jpg
  • logo.png
  • movie.nfo
  • movie.xml
  • poster.jpg
  • Shining, The [1980] 1080p.mkv
  • Shining, The [1980] 1080p.nfo
  • Shining, The [1980] 1080p.srt
  • Shining, The [1980] 1080p.tbn
  • Shining, The [1980] 1080p_mkv_JRSidecar.xml
  • Shining, The [1980] 1080p-fanart.jpg
  • Shining, The [1980] 1080p-trailer.mp4
  • Shining, The [1980] 1080p-trailer_mp4_JRSidecar.xml

I can switch back from MCM’s agent, but my library is massive as I have half a drive dedicated to just my Plex DB. Would it just be better to rebuild the libraries completely instead?

Thanks

Yes, this movie is matched with the MCM agent.
I honestly think Local Media Assets won’t work as described with this agent.

If you really want to convert to the Plex default agent, I recommend you to:

  • put the release year into regular parentheses ( ), not angular brackets [ ]
  • don’t butcher the movie title: The Shining (1980) - 1080p.mkv
