Playback fails with external vobsub subtitles enabled

Server Version#: 1.40.5.8897 - Running on OSX 14.6.1 and a M2 Mac Mini
Player Version#: 4.136.0 Web Client - Chrome on Windows 11.

Update: Still exists in 1.41.0.8930

Plex_Subtitle_Logs.zip (6.0 KB)

Failure Mode:

  • On playback, when a player enable subtitles for videos with external vobsub the playback hangs and the logs show a failed with transcode error message at PMS.
  • Fails on both Web and Android Clients.
  • Fails also with the experimental PMS version for subtitle burnin performance.

Tested

  • These movies used to work in Plex last year.
  • I believe the subtitles are fine and verified that multiple movie files will play back with subtitles in:
    • Emby
    • Direct Movie Play w/ VLC on Windows and OSX

Experiments

  • Clearing and redownloading Codecs
  • A few different versions of Plex and different platforms (Synology and OSX).

This feels similar to an issue that was automatically closed a while back, but the problem still happens to me:

I just used Subtitle Edit and converted on VobSub to SRT and the playback works flawlessly. Looks like the problem is when the vobsob is a separate external file.

I just updated to Version 1.41.0.8911 and playback still fails. “Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error.”

1.41.0.8976 1.41.0.8992 are still broken - I’ve tried both keeping the vobsub files in the same directory and within a “subtitles” directory.

Updated to 1.41.2.9134 - problem still exists.

Am also having this issue; can provide logs if/when someone looks into this
