I have a question about transcoding and was hoping for some guidance. I understand Direct Play and it’s how I enjoy all the movies in my library since it requires the least amount of resources. What I am having trouble figuring out is, what happens if a Nvidia Shield TV Pro is set to direct play within the Plex app and hooked up to a non 4K TV and I try to play a 4k movie. Will it direct play since the device itself can handle it, will the Nvidia Shield transcode it to the correct format, or will this cause my server to transcode the video file. I do understand that he won’t get actual 4K or any benefits from playing 4K since his TV is only HD. I just want to avoid transcoding if possible and hoping that either the shield will transcode since it has the ability or that it will play the video file as is. Thanks for any input.
Assuming the codecs are compatible it should direct play and the shield should downsample render to the resolution of the tv.
Thanks Bigwheel, what I was hoping to hear. I know the device can direct play as I own one but my TV is 4K and just wasn’t sure what would happen if I bought one for my dad since his TV isn’t.
