Transfer plex to new synology NAS

Hello

Recently switched Nas drives to upgrade to a more powerful and more space new NAS.
Plex will see the new server but it says add media.
I copied over all the plex data from the folder and app data etc into the same folder on my new NAS but it does not see the media.
Can someone please help as It took me a long time to build metadata and photos of my media etc.

thanks

It sounds like you’ve done a few things incorrectly.
I need some more detail

  1. You copied, specifically,
    – What was copied,
    – from where to where
    – using what tools/method ?

  2. Did you also upgrade from DSM 6 → 7 in the process ?

  3. Plex.tv shows you having two DS224+ servers with the exact same name.
This is clearly incorrect. What should exist ?

I have done the same thing however when making a copy to a new NAS and/or new storage pool you need to reinstall the plex media server on the new NAS as it can not run with different ip/mac etc.
Also under your authorized devices make sure you delete the old NAS (if not using it for plex anymore) and it only authorizes the new NAS!

Hi there

I couldnt clone my synology Nas due to synology well…being synology ie hyper backup everything would not work .I am only raid O so my storage pool is over 2 drives.

So I got 2 new drives and copies out old the date from the old server into the new and loaded up an saved server config from the last server hoping it would restore the new drives to the same as the old.

I then copied in all my films and music from the drives and copied in my plex metadata from the old server too.

Just want my setting and metadat from the old server to been seen on these drive and pick up where I left off.

ps didnt have to update to dsm as my old server which I tried to hyper backup from is a 218 so it was on DSM 7

thanks for the help

hello

did your advice and now I have no servers.

it says unreachable.

Yes now re-install the plex server on your NAS.

I did that- I unstialled the re installed got the latest update in

It sees my server but none of the files or folders and they are there as I am also logged into synology nas.

got the plex seeing the new nas

However it does not see any of my files or storage and most importantly the setting from my old NAS ie. movie posters , titles and metadata descriptions.

Is there a way I can copy in my settings and metadata from the old nas to the new one.

thanks

Yes uou beed to re-add all your movies, tvshows etc yo your new plex server

trying that but it is not seeing half my files and I am having to start from scratch with posters and metadata etc. currently not seeing any of my old settings despite the fact I have made pathways and filenames exactly the same as the old server.

any help would be much appreciated thank you.

Got the new NAS seeing some of the files but it wont see my movies folder.

Hopefully can get the metadata in somehow and this worrks.

It looks like some incorrect assumptions were made which resulted in incorrect steps.
It is not necessary to “use a big hammer” when dealing with DSM 7

Fundamantals:

  1. Unless a friendly name is manually set, the machine’s name is used:
    – EG… Default would be 'DISKSTATION"
    – If you named it “DS1815” then that would be the default PMS name.
    – Setting a Friendly Name (Settings - Server - General) sets a specific name.

  2. Plex.tv, and all the apps, care about the ID numbers in Preferences.xml. The ID numbers are what matter. The name assigned is cosmetic.
    – If two servers have the same ID number – there will be a collision and all apps will be receive conflicting info.
    – If two servers have the same NAME but different ID numbers, it will simply be listed twice.

  3. Using a Hyperbackup, which makes a perfect CLONE BACKUP, from one machine and restoring on another will work PROVIDED you remember to EDIT Preferences.xml to REMOVE the three (3) “ID” number value pairs AND the pathnames for the actual media is managed.

  4. DSM 7 is much more dependent on the Linux UserID numbers for the actual “PlexMediaServer” user than DSM 6 was for user “Plex”.

  5. DSM 7 has removed our ability to fix any “permission/ownership” problems we might detect with Plex’s internal data (metadata). (Synology removed this for everyone)

  6. Lastly, I’m always here, PLEASE PING ME before breaking out the :hammer_and_pick:

Now let’s get this put back in order.

Hi mate

tried hyper backup but ti didnt work. I even have 2 servers. failed everytime.
Even bought a disk cloning device and tried macrium reflect with advanced settings but the drive was not excepted every time I put it in the new NAS.

I have deleted the old server from the plex software and connected to the new one.

Metadata copied in but as I am scanning for files it is not going well

Ie folders not being seen- shows being read wrong etc

yes can do

thank you !!

ALL:

It took some time but we got it done.

  1. Renamed the existing ‘AppData’ → ‘AppData-Save’
  2. Using ‘tar’, COPIED the old DSM 7 installation to the PlexMediaServer shared folder
  3. at the SSH command line, as root, chown -R to get the ownership fixed
  4. Ran DBRepair.sh to put the database back in order
  5. Started Plex

While there, we cleaned out a few old thing wasting space.

Total time - about 3 hours.

@thejonesboy
I forgot to tell you: "OK to delete AppData-Save.
