Transfer server host from old to new laptop

Server Version#:1.112.0.359-0d79a49f
Player Version#:
Before I explain my problem - I am a complete novice. So the best I can do is follow simple instructions! I only use Plex to play my music library on my mobile hard drives and NAS.

The ‘server version’ I typed above - this is the ‘version’ I saw in: settings-plex for windows -general.

My problem - I transfered my database from the old laptop to the new - everything is there - even the playlists. For me that was a very difficult chore - can’t believe I succeeded.

BUT - the old computer is still the Server Host. How do I transfer ownership to my new laptop. I really thought there would just be a button somewhere in settings that says something like - Make This Computer The Server. But I guess I am just naive - it won’t be that easy.

PLEASE HELP

What did you do and what didn’t you?
Did you transfer the registry data as well?
If you did, the old server must never be running again.

I did transfer registry. I accessed it via regedit and then copied it to the new laptop. I then exited Plex from my old laptop.

Then the “identity” of the old server was copied to the new machine.
Your Plex clients should ideally not show anything different than before.

What exactly do you mean by that?
How did you determine it?

When I tried to play music from my new laptop - the message said my server not available

Did you verify on the new server machine, that the network connection is classified as “private”? It must not be “public”.

I just checked in ‘Network & Internet’. Private Network is checked - Public is not

On your clients, have you tried to sign out of your account, close the Plex app, then start it up and sign in again?
This should force it to contact plex.tv and fetch the updated server address.

Are you working with an manually created port forwarding for remote access?
If so, did you edit it to point it at the IP address of the new server machine?

I’m sorry - you must be frustrated with me. I barely understand the questions you are asking me.
BUT - i did sign out of PLEX and when i try to sign in again - the message on the sign in page says - ‘This application is at 192.168.100.146 and is not hosted by Plex. Continue only if you recognize this server and with to grant access’

BTW - the above ip address is my new laptop’s

This is nomal, if you use the local Plex web app. You can continue on that page.

Make sure to grant access to the local network to plex.tv and this IP address in the web browser’s settings.

How do I ‘grant access to the local network to plex.tv and this IP address in the web browser’s settings’?

It depends on which web browser you’re using. See Important note about the Plex Web app - Local Network Access

thankyou for your patience. I’ll take a look at the link you just gave me. I hope I understand what is says!

I’m using Firefox

AFAIK, Firefox does not have that setting – yet.
It may come in the near future. So if it pops up a dialog box when you open the web app, where it asks if you want it to grant access to the local network, you should do it.

It seems you are correct - Firefox says it is currently under development

no dialog box has opened so far
