So I have my library stored on a NAS device, then my actual plex server is on my network. I have just moved house and have to use a new router, I know a little bit about this and know it’s possible to keep the same server, but how do I actually do it? The ip adress will obviously be different now, and I’ve seen a few people say to try “port forwarding” but when it comes to that I am an absolute noob and I just can’t find an in depth explanation of exactly how to do this? I also don’t actually what it means, am I changing the IP for the server? Or the IP of the new router to match the old one? Or something completely different. Could anyone give me some in depth advice on how I can complete this process? Thanks in advanced!
It depends on a few things. For one, the Plex server will need to know where the media on the NAS is. If it’s a Windows Plex server, I assume then that you were using a mapped drive, then accessing that drive letter within Plex. If this is the case, you will likely have to re-map the drive letter in Windows to the new IP of the NAS. If you were using computer names instead (such as \\MYNAS\Media
instead of \\192.168.0.10\Media
), you might not have to change anything on the server.
If it’s a Linux server, you will have to remember how you access your NAS share that way. For me, I have an entry in my fstab file (If I am remembering right) that points to the NAS IP. This entry would have to be modified to the new IP of the NAS.
Once all this is done, Plex should work within your network. If you want to enable remote access, you need to go into your modem/router settings and enable UPNP. This is the simplest method, Plex will use UPNP to punch the hole in the router automatically to itself. If you cannot, then you will need to do the “port forwarding” yourself, and this is in the router/modem. This section varies wildly per router, so I will be unable to tell you exactly where to go right now, but the key bits of information you need to enter are the “DESTINATION IP” is the IP of your server (not the NAS), and the “SOURCE PORT” and “DESTINATION PORT” will both be TCP 32400. Once that is done, it should work, but a lot of things can go wrong.
Thankyou for the quick reply! I will certainly try this out when I can. I setup the actual server through synology, one of the plugins is a plex server plugin, if that changes anything. Then under the network I was on, I mapped the drives and accessed the letter mapped through plex yes. One thing I’ll add is that when I open the server, either through an app or through synology, I just get a general unavailable message. Because of this I’m not actually able to access the server in any way, so I’m not sure how I can change the mapped drives etc. I’ve attached an image below in case that helps
I’m available if needed.
Just let me know what the server is moving from and to (OS & version info for both) and I’ll be able to customize help.
That would certainly be helpful, do you what router I was using and what router I am using now?
Since you’ve already moved (?), it’s best to know what you have now.
Please clarify this?
- Media on your Synology.
Got that !
- “then my actual plex server is on my network”
Can you explain this a little better?
Are you wanting to move your server from one computer to another -or- perhaps to run on your Synology?
Yes I’ve already moved and got the new router. I’d like to run the same server on Synology again. So when I originally set it up, I used the find my synology app, found it, then when I open it, it takes me to the main page of the synology nas device I have. From there I setup the folders where I store my library. Then, under what I believe is called packages, one of packages is for a plex server. So I set it up using that. What I meant by network was that I plugged the synology box into my router, when I open the server via the package, it opens with an IP, I’m assuming that’s the router IP but I don’t actually know that. So now when I go to open the server through the package (or through any app) it’s just unavailable, as I’m assuming it can’t access that IP anymore with the new router. Again I’m not super knowledgeable on this so apologies if I’m doing a bad job at explaining, let me know if I can clarify anything else
Looking at your account,
-
I see you had a Plex server on windows 10.
– You can take those server files (if you still have them) and move them to the Synology
– I’ve created a procedure. It has a lot of steps. If you make any mistakes along the way… we’ll just back up, fix it, and keep going -
I see you have the server installed on DSM 7 (DS420+)
-
Since it’s not understanding / finding the server for you, I have a procedure for you to do which will reclaim (attach) the server to your account.
This procedure will help you claim it.
The important part is that , when it’s done installing, confirms the server is claimed to your username (it will show on the installation final message when done)
Let me know if any questions.
Ah that definitely looks promising! I’m not home right now so I’ll give this a try in a few hours and let you know how it goes, I do appreciate the help very much!
One caution –
When you get the Claim code – Don’t wait too long.
The claim token, for security reasons, is only valid for 5 minutes
ChuckPA is the one to talk to about Plex on the Synology, for sure. I want to point out though, that the Plex server on Synology in their Package Center is obsolete. You can go to Plex’s Downloads center to get the most up to date Plex Server package for DSM 7, then install that with the “Manual Install” button in the Package Center.
I worry that if you go from a up-to-date Windows install and transfer over the server files to an older DSM install, the database might get corrupted.
As pointed out by “Dr Undefined” (Divideby0), you probably don’t want 1.29.2
from Synology Package Center.
The best step here is to download from http://Plex.tv/downloads – DSM 7 (selection)
Thanks for all the help, the thread you linked above solved my issue perfectly, much appreciated!!
