I greatly appreciate the advanced library settings “Use Original Titles” and “Prefer artwork based on library language”, because I think it’s preferable to leave as much of the original language’s context as possible, even when I need subtitles to understand. So, I prefer to leave original titles and artwork.
Writing systems are a different matter, though, because no one can read more than a few, if even more than one. It would be very helpful to have an additional option to transliterate rather than translate — adapt original titles to the writing system used by the library’s main language.
As to how this could be accomplished, it would be ideal to find a free API that Plex servers could call on to do this. Google used to have one called simply Google Transliterate, but it has long since been deprecated. The function seems to have been subsumed into Google Translate, to which you can’t make API calls for free.
There is a GPLv3-licensed tool that has transliteration capability, called Polyglot, but it doesn’t appear to have been updated recently. Perhaps someone with more specialized knowledge in this area will know of a better option.
A movie database that had, for instance, the titles of Japanese movies transliterated to the Roman alphabet, could also be utilized for this purpose.
