Hello,
I upgraded to Plex pass and the latest PMS, now I have random artists with a trash can icon super imposed and it will not go away (see attached). What does it mean and how do I get rid of it? Thanks.

Yeah, nothing has changed with my media and its occuring with a huge majority of my music. The only thing I did was the upgrade of PMS and Plex Pass.

If that is so, then update your music library. Wait til it's finished and then empty library trash. Then close the browser and open again.

Hmm. I'll give this a try and see what happens. Thanks.

That did not fix things, in fact it made them worse. Now I only have 1 artist in my library (see attachment). I can't tell how hard I had to keep from getting choked up seeing this after spending the last few days correcting the crap metadata info that was pulled in for the artists and the mismatched pictures. Jesus H...
Plex really needs to take some lessons from J-River on how to import media information. I've never worked this hard to maintain a music library, especially when I have a very pristinely tagged with album art music collection. With J-River, you tell it what folder your music is stored in and it gets all the info from the tags, like this should but does not...well at least not correctly.
Damn you Amazon Fire Stick for leading me here! (ok, that last part was a bit dramatic, but it is true, I wouldn't be trying to work with Plex if it wasn't on the stick and J-River's Gizmo app doesn't work that well on it).
I'm going to run a force refresh and hopefully that will work properly. I'll report back. Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate the help.
Very apparently, you did not what I told you in post #2.
Either you renamed one folder high up in the filepath or you attached your media storage under a different mountpoint (or drive letter, if you're on Windows).
The trash can symbol appears when the media files are unreachable for the Plex server.
You can try to restore a plex database backup.

Thanks for the reply. I did exactly as instructed and reported the results. The entire process took most of the day (I have a large collection). I've been an IT guy/network admin for 18 years, so I'm very proficient in the art of following directions that are way more complicated.
My MP3 files have been residing at d:\ServerFolders\Music for over 2 years. The symbols didn't appear until I upgraded to the latest version, which was the strange part. I had been using the previous version for over a week. The force refresh has been running for a bit now so I'm just going to let it finish and see where I'm at before I figure out how I'm going to proceed. I do have database backups if I decide to go that way.

I’m starting to see this issue too, and I’ve looked at the media paths and haven’t been able to identify the problem. One thing that is frustrating about this is that Plex will completely remove albums from the list instead of showing a trash icon on them if they have been “soft deleted.” So, I see a trash icon on the artist, but have no way to see what Plex is holding onto in order to attempt to recover or decide that it is old information. Is there a way to view a list of items that are “soft deleted” so their paths can be confirmed?

This doesn’t sound right.
Verify it is not a web browser cache issue by using a different browser and/or reloading the page and/or clearing browser cache.

You should see the ‘binned’ items, as far as they are indeed just ‘soft’ deleted. If Plex however has already emptied its library trash, then they are gone.
You can try also the FindMissing plugin. (Though it might fail with large music libraries.)
How to install channels/plugins manually

I can see the trash icon on the same artists on different computers (I saw one on a friend’s computer while demonstrating Plex to him). I’ve looked on my work notebook and my Mac after clearing caches on both of those. So, I don’t think it is a web browser cache issue.

Premium Music Libraries seem to work differently. If I remove an album in an artist directory and then update the library, the album will disappear. It doesn’t stay with a trash icon superimposed.
There is one other person that has posted about having this issue: forums.plex.tv/discussion/216821/trash-cans-appearing-in-music-library-poster-view. The problem he describes is exactly like what I’m experiencing. The trash icon only appears in the Posters view.
I will try the plugin you recommended. Thank you.
So, I’ve installed the FindMissing plugin as per your suggestion. The results were “All is good…no files are missing.” This matches what I’ve seen when clicking into the artists that have the trash can over their poster images. The trash can appears after I’ve done the “Plex Dance” with an album to fix an incorrect match with the embedded metadata. It would be nice to have an option under “Fix incorrect match” to use the embedded metadata as an option, but that’s a different subject.
Do you have any ideas as to what can be done with this trash can issue? It doesn’t seem to affect functionality, but it is certainly an eyesore, and is a bit confusing to my family when they are using Plex. This issue has persisted now up to the current Plex Pass version, Version 1.0.3.2461.
Settings - Server - Library - ‘Empty trash automatically after every scan’
is this active? if so, disable it
How are your media files stored?
Are they on the same machine as the server is?
Are they on a NAS or a network share?
Are you using an external hard drive case or a NAS with harddisks in JBOD configuration?

It was checked, I’ve just unchecked it.
How are your media files stored?
They are not stored according to the Plex Media Preperation Guide. The folder structure is similar to the iTunes structure: Music\ARTIST\ALBUM\TRACKS. Tracks are 01 TITLE.xxx or 1-01 TITLE.xxx depending on multi-disc or not. all files are m4a, flac or mp3.
Are they on the same machine as the server is?
Yes, the same machine.
Are they on a NAS or a network share?
My Plex server is running on a Synology NAS and all of the media is stored on there as well. All on the same volume, but different shared folder.
Are you using an external hard drive case or a NAS with harddisks in JBOD configuration?
The disks are using a Synology Hybrid Raid.

This should be OK, as long as your metatags are in order.

I can only guess here. It may have to do with a drive that is slow to spin up when the library is accessed. This may lead to weird issues.
Just keep an eye on it, how it behaves now with the changed preference.

Ok. I’ll keep an eye on it for a month or so and report back. Do you think I should do the “Plex Dance” on these artists now with the changed preference in place? Is there any maintenance i should run?
I’d only run the default Butler tasks.
And make sure that all drives have spun up before you trigger a library update within Plex.
Mine did this tonight. Used it all day yesterday and for a few hours this early afternoon. Everything was fine. Just sat down and turned it on and every artist in the middle of the rows, excluding the last on the left and last on the right, has a trash can. Throughout the whole collection of just over 2500 artists… I’ve been trying out Plex for the last couple days to see if it works across all my devices. As of last night I was all in to purchase the lifetime pass. But, now, especially after reading some of the above comments, will make me put the breaks on and do a bit more investigating…
Haven’t moved or touched anything. As you can see in the 2nd picture, I can still get to my music on my computer (Same computer the Server is on). But Plex, which was working just fine an hour before this, has decided it can’t find my music…
