I often record a few minutes before and after a programme as found the DVR missing either the beginning or the end, very annoying.
I’d like a feature so that I could mark the actual start and end of a programme and plex would trim it and leave only the programme. Would also save space!
I have started to use dvr recently and I would also appreciated this feature.
Vote for it!!
YES! This feature would be really much appreciated.
Hi guys,
Love Plex as so many do. Firstly, sorry if this is posted somewhere else, I did have a brief look.
Plex does a great job at recording live tv and then cutting out the ads in-between the program you wish to watch. Such an awesome feature and I love Plex for adding this.
Current Situation:
My suggestion comes from this angle though. Sometimes you set a recording to record 10 minutes in front and after the program so the recording doesn’t actually miss some of it. Plex’s ad algorithm doesn’t seem to edit these start and end sections and even if it did in the future, it may decide to leave the program prior to the one you want to record as, well, technically that program is not an ad. And no one wants to have to go find the video, trim the video to actual start/end of the program, and then put it back in Plex.
Suggestion:
Hence my suggestion is this. Could Plex add a button/feature to the player so that while watching a program and when the actual start of the video comes along, you simply press this button once, then when the end comes along, you press this button a second time. Now what you’ve told Plex is the start and end times of your program and it will mark the video after you’ve finished watching for trimming. That’s it!
A nice add-on:
In relation to the button, it could be that the user has to be really specific about the start and end times, but it would be nice if Plex could work their magic and get a custom algorithm to look about 15 seconds each way of your button press and work out at what point the program actually started/ended.
Benefits:
- Happy users
- Saved storage space
Hope you like it!
I like this idea, you could even go with what MCEBuddy does which allows you to select sections like this:
Bump!
Who should have access to this feature (as you’ve proposed, just pressing a button to mark the beginning of content and end)? Just the server owner? Or, should it include shared users and managed accounts (do we trust them)? Should it be a permanent modification of the file (hence the idea of saving storage space as proposed by the OP) or should it just be done via markers, such as is possible with intro detection and ad skip?
The ability already exists to fast forward past such unwanted video.
I would prefer permanent changes to the original file to save space, however at this stage, wouldn’t mind either option. With regards to file changes, you could do this via two types of permissions. You could extend to users or managed accounts the option of just marking the start and end points only or a second permission to also allow them to also permanently change the file using those markers.
If only option one is enabled for a user, and they work away on different files, when the server owner later views that file, Plex could highlight that there are suggested trim points (from other users in this case) upon which they could choose to review and then approve or deny those changes.
