Trying to figure out why most of my Samsung TV users are transcoding?

Dear all.

As the topic states im trying to figure out why all of a sudden , my users with Samsung TV seems to be transcoding when streaming from my server.? Normally they are streaming without transcoding, but now I see “transcoding h264 to h264” ?

My current upload speed is testet to 61 Mbps = 7.625 MB/s which should be plenty for streaming without any issues? Never had any complaints so far  , so no buffering etc. Dont know if its because the server never have made a “Perform extensive media analysis during maintenance” ? My server is not online at night, only during evening. So the scheduled task never runs. Can it have something to do with that? I read a note:

“Note: If the deep analysis for a file hasn’t yet been performed, your Plex Media Server will assume a [2 x average bitrate] value if it’s needed for streaming limitation calculations.”

How long time does the server needs to make this analysis for my media files? I have aprox 8TB data .

My server settings is set to the following:

Server:
Remote Access:

  • Internet upload speed 61Mbps
  • Limit remote stream bitrate ( Original (no limit) )

Network:

  • Remote streams allowed pr user ( Unlimited )

Transcoder:

  • Transcoder settings haven’t been touched at all.

Web
As I understand its for streaming from server to a webbrowser, correct?

Quality:

  • Internet Streaming , Video Quality 4Mbps, 720p
Enabled: Play smaller videos at original quality
    Enabled: Use recommended settings

Here is an example of a media file. ( If I stream this over LAN, its not transcoding at all )

  1. Set the time (start & end) to run when your server is on.
  2. If users are requesting subtitles and their players cannot process the subtitles as SRT, or are requesting subtitles be burned in (also check your Server settings), the transcoder will run and burn-in those subtitles.
  3. Your sample has an average bitrate of 6.6 Mbps yet you set quality at 4 Mbps. This file will be transcoded when playing if played at these settings

Hi ChuckPA

Thanks for your answer.

Ok I need to ask. Web setting, does it has something do to when they stream from my server to their TV, or is it only from web streaming from ex. Internet Explorer , Safari etc ?

My server runs from 16pm to aprox 23:45pm everyday except weekend where is from 09am to 00:00pm

If the web streaming quality is set to higher, do I need to change settings, and restart server to take effect?

Thanks

Morphy

Yes, The web client, like any client, has desired playback settings. This includes video and audio as well as subtitles.

If the web streaming values are increased, and they do not have subtitles set to always burn-in (unless that’s needed), you will see less transcoder activity

Thank you so much

Gonna test it out.

Cheers

Hi again ChuckPA.

I have changed the settings, still its transcoding. And I know that this user is normally direct playing.

Web settings:

Web

Quality:
Internet Streaming , Video Quality 12Mbps , 1080p ,

Player:

Burn subtitles, automatic

Server:
Ekstras.

Enabled Automatically select audio and subtitle tracks
Prefer audio: English
Subtitled: Alway enabled
Prefer sub: Danish

Does it have something to do with Server- Remote Access - Internet upload speed? I didn’t have that setting before I became plexpass member. What happens if I dont set any info in.?

Seems that some setting is messing up my direct play for Samsung TVs ?

Thanks

Thanks for that. Browsers don’t accept DTS audio and it’s very likely, unless they have a sound bar, the TV will accept more than 2-channel stero as well. . The transcoder must run to convert the audio to 2-channel stereo

Thanks for the explanation
