Trying to play music from home pc at work

I have been able to do this in the past plenty of times, for one reason or another it shows all of my music but just will not play the songs, the video playback on a movie works fine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I suppose the key question is:
Are you currently unable to play music/videos while outside your home network or is this issue only affecting playback while you’re at work?
While you’re connected to your work WIFI, your IT can restrict certain traffic (e.g. if they feel staff is clogging their network with private streaming  ).

If you cannot stream from outside your home network at all you’ll need to provide some more details in order to pin this down – e.g.:

  • have you configured a manual port forward in your router / Plex Media server to enable remote access or are you using the automatic configuration?
  • can you access your router’s public IP address with the specified public port from outside your home network (you can check this e.g. using a service like canyouseeme.org)?
  • what versions of Plex do you have installed (Plex Media Server and Plex app on your iOS device)?

Yes to all of those questions asked as far as the remote access and port forwarding, I am currently at work and there is no restriction on streaming from it, that’s what I was saying I can stream video just fine any movie from my plex server located on the hard drives at home and I can see all of my music but when I go to play the song nothing happens shows the song album etc and the time play scale but play does not change to pause and music never plays. I feel like there’s a boxed check wrong somewhere or something wrong with the way the music is listed, not sure cause like I said it doesn’t always happen. It’s strange to because on certain songs or albums I get multiple options for which server to play or choose from, like for instance my sever is called mavis server I only have the music in one location but it will give me two options both saying mavis server mavis server. I’ve tried both and same result.

Ok… so you can play media – just not from your music library. Or to be more precise… even that’s working occasionally but not for all songs/albums/tracks?!

Do you see those same-named servers also when you open your server via Plex Web (e.g. as dedicated entries in the library navigation → More) or under https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/devices/pms?

So when I go to https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/devices/pms? and use the browser, it’s very strange i can see all of my music but it says (playback error) please check that the files exist and the necessary drive is mounted.

Thank you very much sir you got me to the point of realization, I’ve added and swapped drives lately and for some reason my music had the wrong drive affiliated with it, in process of changing that remotely and that should fix it. One other quick question while I have your attention, sometimes while streaming playing movies, music etc. I get a little window that pop ups on the top of the player saying something like not on the main network playback may not play as well something along those lines, what does this mean exactly and how can I change it for best settings, I pay for plex and I assume I shouldn’t be seeing this. Thank you

Where / in what situation exactly do you get that message and in what app?

When trying to play something or just randomly while something is playing. If I get it again I will make sure to take a screen shot. Thanks

Why does it show a little green lock next to my server name. What does that look indicate.

If you hover over it, the green lock should show a tooltip stating you have a secure connection to that server.
