Tuner on machine other than server?

Hi everyone,

Last night I received my new Hauppauge quadHD tuner and was excited to get it installed. It’s working, but not quite as I’d hoped. Maybe you can assist.

I’m running Plex Server on my desktop Windows box (old server) and also on a Synology DS916+ NAS (new server). My goal was to move everything to the NAS, but it doesn’t have any PCI slots, so the TV tuner card has to install in the desktop box.

When I go to create a DVR in Plex, the desktop Plex server finds the local tuner card with no problem, but the NAS Plex server can’t see it, even if I explicitly provide the IP address.

Is this a known limitation, that the tuner card has to be local to the machine the server is running on? Anything I can try to make the tuner card visible to the NAS server?

As a side question, the desktop box has a 3.5 GHz quad-core i5 while the NAS has a 1.6 GHz quad-core Pentium® N3710 with AES-NI hardware encryption engine (transcoding) and 8GB RAM. Does one device strike you as a better Plex server platform than the other? Thanks for your thoughts!

USB tuner must be plugged into the server, not another machine. You can setup your Windows machine to do recordings using Plex and place the recordings in shares on NAS. I personally would suggest recording locally on computer and then either post process to move recording to NAS or setup a script that runs occasionally to move all recordings found to NAS. All clients could then use NAS for playback of recordings, if Live TV is a requirement you would need to use the computer Plex Server for Live TV since it would have the tuner installed.

Edit: hate phone keyboards. Need to wear reading glasses when typing.

Thanks John, that makes sense and I’m leaning in that direction. But I do have a followup question: Why, when you go to add a DVR, does the dialog state, “Don’t see your device? Enter its network address manually” and gives you the option of entering an IP address? That gives the impression the tuner card can be located on any IP-addressable device. (Also this is a PCI card, not USB, but I think the principle is the same).

Here’s the result I get when trying to add a tuner card that’s not local to the server computer. Obviously it’s not working, but the question is, if the card has to be local, then what’s the purpose of the “enter its network address manually” option?

For a network tuner such as the Silicon Dust HDHR devices.

aha. Thanks John!
