Tv being matched as movies, minor gui bugfix please

Server Version#: latest, linux Version 1.19.1.2645
Player Version#: app.plex.tv / various

when fixing matches in “tv shows” you can search the movie database to flag them as movies
when fixing matches in “movies” you cannot search the tv database to flag them as tv

this only seems to be an issue, when there is a tv show and a movie released in the same year with the same name after recent updates.

Rare but messy please let us manually overwrite auto match to the right category and from there it should work fine like it used to.

have i posted in the right place for this to get noticed and eventually fixed?

some examples would be:
containment 2016
money heist 2020

Perhaps the poltergeists have ghoulish sense of humor…

No, you cannot.
TMDB has strictly separate listings for tv shows and movies.
In a tv show library in plex, you can only match your items to the ‘tv show’ part of TMDB.

And the admins of TMDB are actively purging miscategorized records from their database, when a multi-part “mini series” has been added as “movie”.

Both examples above are tv shows.
You cannot place them into the folder of a movie library. It won’t work.
Carefully separate your content by type, into different folders.
Point your Plex “movies” library only to the folder containg your movies.
Point your Plex “tv shows” library only to the folder containg your tv shows.

That’s a horrendous amount of work i can certainly appreciate it!

A lil heads up, yes you can.
fixing match on tv.

fixing match on movies.

I suspect that its done this way to prevent the agents getting suck in a loop somewhere in the code
Perhaps adding the tvdb to the movies agent, but setting it not to search unless triggered manually by user?

Additionally while its a 3rd party plugin i think plex webtools. I cant seem to figure out how to add the YouTube agent to artists/albums where most would want it, and disable it from tv/movies.

Manual overwrites for both agents would be extremity helpful

Your screen shots don’t confirm your statement.
TMDB is available in a tv show library, because they also have tv shows in their database. And tv shows are the only type of content which which will get matches in a ‘tv shows’ library, no matter the agent setting.

The rules: https://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/your-media/

Im sorry but no, you cannot claim 100% accuracy. As good as plex is, that’s a nearly impossible level of accuracy.

Gauging from the problem, it seems that The movie database is prioritized over the Tv database when multiple matches for the same file is found. There has to be a failover default somewhere think about it.

I think we are getting confused here. The problem is that tv shows are showing up as movies not the other way around, and so the Problem is with the movie agent not the tv agent.

When this happens regardless of the available agents in the movie section of fix matches you cannot set it back to tv even if you give it the tvdb show number.

Finally, look at the top agent above the drop down box being the default agent searched, that says what type of file plex thinks it is.

Sorry, I can only point you to the documentation, which explains how it is supposed to work.

Warning! : Plex will do its best to appropriately find and match content. However, a failure to separate content such as movies and TV shows may result in unexpected or incorrect behavior.

Oh for gods sake!

It is the MOVIE database that cant be overwritten its clearly shown in the screenshots. This is the problem

It is clearly shown in the screenshots.

in the first screenshot you get TV and MOVIE agents to search with.
In the second scattershot you get Plex movie and The movie database.

So there is no way to reverse it. We are not given the option to do so.
I am only asking for a small tweak, please let us manually overwrite incorrect matches when needed and to disable 3rd party agents from sections we don’t want.

No. The problem is pointing a Plex Movie library to files, which are not movies.

Now your just being obstructive and trolling. Instead of actually filing a bug report your intentionally blaming anything you can think of. This is toxic to online communities, let-alone your profit margins.

If you do not wish to be dethroned as a mod then i strongly suggest you file a simple bug report and close the matter.

The whole purpose of plex is to sort out the mess of files.

Please follow the link I have set for you above, to the official documentation.
The quote was from this official documentation.

Please do your job and file a bug report.

There is no bug - you can’t put movies and TV Shows in the same library.
You can’t match Movies and TV Shows in ‘Other’ Libraries.
If you insist on disregarding the rules laid down for proper operation - expect failures.

Failures are normally easily corrected with fix matches, it does 99% of the work for you. Problem is in reverse. It is also is an issue of scale. I am sure there are plenty out there with substantial librarys.

What you are suggesting means a global overwrite of agents banning them them from seeing and matching all files for the sake of a few. This is unpractical, for the sake of a little button, that will solve the headache for everyone.

We are seriously talking about 5 minutes of code nothing major. Instead you are opting to annoy your userbase and have to respond to all the forum queries about it. Not to mention missing the opportunity’s of plex pass sales which will vastly pay off for itself.

Heck you don’t even have to change the gui, but rather set the failover default to tv, that way in the case of any failures users can take care of the problem themselves.

Well, go ahead and fix that - and Otto being afraid of being DeThroned will probably run it right up the flagpole for ya and we’ll see who salutes.

the fact is you are putting Movies and TV Shows in the same Library - and it’s not working - just as it says it won’t in the documentation - and one Veteran and one Super Ninja have told you as much.

Plex is open source? I didn’t realize that. I do struggle with correlating abstract code to find my way though it, When i find the time and if i can make heads or tails of it, then sure! Happy to push code and help out where i can.

Yay… Plex is looking for a few good ‘coders’ and from what I hear you can work from home…

One thing they ARE going to insist on - is a unique ability to follow instructions.
Might want to practice that a bit before you submit your resume.

I wouldn’t say im good, or expecting to get paid, but fixing niggles is certainly worth a try!
Besides now that i know plex is open source that changes things!
wanders off and buys a plex pass

Plex is not Open Source.
It may make use of open sourced code libraries and contributes also code to some of these projects.

The only project which is open source is Plex Media Player https://github.com/plexinc/plex-media-player

Let me try to clarify.

This is not true. You can change the source that is used to match, which is what your screenshot shows. But what gets matched will still be considered a TV show. And this only works if the file is still named like a TV show. i.e. Have a season an episode number. If these are movie specials, then they get placed in the “Specials” folder with an appropriate episode number. For example, if you have something like “Friends - The Movie (2025)” that won’t be seen even if you used TheMovieDB agent. The file would have to be something like “Friends - S00E05 - The Movie”. So in the end it is still matching as a TV show.

And the other shave said. You cannot make a TV show a movie and vice versa. If you want TheTVDB to be used as an agent for movies, that could technically be done, but it won’t help since TheTVDB doesn’t have movies.
