TV Butler - Things to try

Some users have had issues with TV Butler and I think have some workarounds for folks having issues.

If you’re having problems scanning channels, you can look in your Plex Media Server.log and see these errors:

Jun 7 00:34:26 Server01 Plex Tuner Service: Device attached: 1d19:0100
Jun 7 00:34:26 Server01 Plex Tuner Service: Error: Could not open USB device due to insufficient permissions

This is likely because of a libusb issue. We will be fixing this in an upcoming release, but in the mean time if you’re comfortable in a command line you can fix it yourself as well.

Follow the instructions below for the Plex Media Server platform you’re using

Linux

Rename the attached file to 60-tvbutler-perms.rules and copy it to /etc/udev/rules.d

Then run:
sudo udevadm control --reload-rules
sudo service udev restart
sudo udevadm trigger

Synology

You do not need to be comfortable with a command line for this. You can use File Station and rename the attached file to 60-tvbutler-perms.rules and copy it to /lib/udev/rules.d

Now reboot your server.

MacOS

So far, the users who have reported issues have reinstalled Plex Media Server and they are able to access their tuner

Windows

Make sure nothing else is trying to use the device, no other capture software such as TeamViewer, and in Sound settings that it’s not set as a default output device.

Let us know if you’re still having issues! If so and on Linux please attach:
Normal PMS logs (Under Settings>Help>Download Logs)

And if on Linux or any NAS:
/var/log/syslog
sudo dmesg > dmesg.txt

as well. Thanks!

it doesn’t work on synology…

Worked for me on Synology DS1515+ in the UK. Thanks!!

Only comment is that when i entered the command:

sudo service udev restart

It stated the service was not running, however on restart all was working.

Hi - thank you for the workarounds. I have a slightly different issue (but adding it here, incase it is linked / helpful). My TV Butler on OS-X (latest version and updates) finds the channels and records TV, but as some point Plex is unable to find it (see attached screenshot).

The system still seems to work fine - downloads TV guide, records shows - but the device cannot be managed. I reinstalled the PMS and the device was found again, only to disappear. Its been like this for a week or two (I’ve only just noticed).

Hi
I have the same problem , with TV Butler not being able to find channels

can anyone tell me where and how to access /lib/udev/rules.d on the Synology , i cant seem to find it in the file manager

Regards

Rob

Now working on Synology after update

I’m using TV Butler on windows with Plex and it doesn’t find any channel. NextPVR does find channels and looks clear in good quality. I tried first with plex (did not have any other tv software installed), checked functioning with NextPVR to make sure hardware is working. What can I do to fix it? I live in the Netherlands Ziggo Rotterdam (43146). Do you need the official TV Butler software? I just installed the drivers, nothing else.

Where can I buy the AUSTRALIA (For Mac) TVButler tv tuner (only) unit … in a physical shop in Melbourne or online (with shipment from australia preferably … alternatively to australia)? I can’t seem to find on Amazon AU, via Plex or via DVBLOGIC, the makers of the unit… madness. Please let me know as I would like to purchase and install ASAP.

lso, I have been reading the latest forum messages, stating that there have been a large number of issues with finding australian tv channels. Is this still happening?

FYI… I will be using a MacMini (late 2012), running the latest OS system and the latest Plex Media Server… with Plex Pass of course.

Thanks in advance for your support.

@carbone1972 I’d recommend the HDHR Connect. I’ve been using one in Melbourne, and it works really well here.

You’ll likely need to SSH into your Synology. On Mac/Linux you can do this right from the terminal. (ssh USERNAME@IPADDRESS), on Windows you will likely need Putty, or Filezilla. Similar idea.

Any news on this issue, I have v6 of the dvblogic server, plex Version 1.8.1.4139 both on same network, added the permission file and plex just continually scan and doesn’t find anything

On Mac and think reinstalled, or does it mean start all over full reset, also if I add the address manually plex says there was a problem adding the device

Cheers

Tried full uninstall and reinstall and two different machines (Mac) and still can’t find the tv tuner

it solved my issue on RaspberryPi, thanks a lot !

Tips: it works after doing chmod 777 on the .rules file.

Cheers,
MC

I can’t see the file that I should rename. I have the issue, but it should work now (2019???)
