tv episode name staking or naming versions

i have a tv show with several different episodes that have the same name and several parts and have tried to do the name staking and it is not working instead it is lumping them together as different versions. is there a way to name the different versions if i could i would be able to live with that and make it work or is there a way to get the name staking to work.

Please explain.
How did you do name the files?
Which show is it?

the orginal doctor who, when it was released it had most of the episodes that where multiple shows. and i am using: Doctor Who/Season 1/ doctor who - S01E01 - Pt1.mkv and using the same format for the parts that follow and just changing the part number. i saw this “By default, Plex matches against TheTVDB.com, so you should name and organize your content based on the information on that site.” and checked there site, my understanding is that it uses this site info to label staked episodes, but they dont have them listed correctly on that site as an episode having several part which was done heavily in the beginning of the shows run. its creating alot of problems getting this set up on plex for proper viewing.

Doctor Who (original series) is one of those problematic series’ that cause no end of problems for people who are trying to name them correctly.

Your only choice is to view each episode, and name it according to the episode name contained in the intro credits. Find the name, and look it up on TheTVDB, it will give you the correct season/number.

If you try to do it in bulk with a renamer, you will end up with a ton of messed up and missing episodes.

If it doesn’t display the episode name in the intro credits (the first series is a prime example), then you can listen to the dialog, and choose a quote. Look up the quote on google, as the scripts are mostly online. That should give you the basic information about the name of the episode to continue your search.

Sorry, the original Doctor Who was aired well before the idea of “seasons” was even thought of. They were filmed in groups of 4-5 episodes, each set telling a single story. Trying to make them fit into our idea of seasons and episodes is very difficult. You could think of them as multiple miniseries, inside a season… but then it all just gets confusing.

As you’re using Plex, and Plex uses TheTVDB, it’s probably just easier to follow what TheTVDB says.

PS. I’m still only 1/4 through renaming my Doctor Who library… I just don’t have the time…

the problem i ran into trying to use that site is that they only list the first episode out of the group for each one that has multiple episodes… if that makes sense… the dont show they other episodes that go with it anywhere so i come up missing info and episodes… thats why i was also hoping there might be a way to name versions. i noticed plex groups them together and list them as versions. if i could name the versions i could just watch them from that list also

here is a general advice how to deal with tv shows in Plex:

  1. Look up your show on TheTVDB
  2. Take the title as it is used on TheTVDB. If there is something in parentheses, take that too. If the title contains invalid characters (depends on your file system), like § : % *, simply leave them out.
  3. Check the naming and the folder structure of your show. Name the top folder of the show exactly after the title on TheTVDB. No abbreviations. No additional subfolders. No aliases.
  4. Name the episode files according to the above linked naming guide. Use the same title as for the top folder. Show's Title - s01e01 - additional info.ext (’- additional info’ can be left out)
  5. After you corrected the naming and folder structure, perform the Plex Dance with all files for this show.

episode files can (under certain conditions) be merged back into one file, making the error-prone stacking obsolete:
