I have some TV files of a show called “The Stranger”. While this show does exist within the TVDB (https://thetvdb.com/series/the-stranger), when I load this series into Plex it always shows a 2020 TV show of the same name(https://thetvdb.com/series/the-stranger-quibi OR https://thetvdb.com/series/the-stranger-2020) . I have tried deleting the metadata, I have tried to Fix Match, I have Unmatched it, but I never seem to even see the correct result in the search, even when I enter the correct year. It always returns one of these two incorrect matches.
Usually the guys (and girls) over at TheTVDb try to avoid this by forcing the official names of reboots etc. to include the year that show first aired in their names (e.g. Doctor Who vs. Doctor Who (2005)) or apply some other way to distinguish them (e.g. House of Cards vs. House of Cards (US)).
You could give it a try including the year your show first aired in your file names / folder structure; e.g.:
TV Shows <- the folder linked by your tv show library
The Stranger (1991)
Season 01
The Stranger (1991) - s01e01 - Summoned by Shadows.ext
The Stranger (1991) - s01e02.ext
The Stranger (1991) - s01e03.ext
...
No guarantees… if there’s redundant names without a unique official name, this can get quite messy with TheTVDb.com. Maybe worth to push them a little in their forums, to clean this up
I tried this, and that causes the matching to fail outright, leaving me with some files with no metadata. Possibly better than having incorrect information, but I still can’t seem to figure out how to get it to load the correct info.
