TV Show Naming Conventions

Server Version#:Windows 10
Player Version#:4.116.1
I know that this topic has been discussed beyond belief and I think I have read them all. But I can’t get Plex to register my new TV episodes. I bought the entire series of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (over 150 episodes). I have ripped all of them and placed them into my Plex directory. That directory in Plex is identified as “TV Shows”. The file name is called (for example): “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea s01e15”. I have also tried “Voyage to the Bottom of the - Sea s01e15”. nothing seems to work. Any help here would be appreciated. Plex is a great tool but this is my #1, well, only complaint about this it.

TV shows need more directory structure than movies: https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-tv-show-files/

ex: * For the “Plex TV Series” agent, it is recommended to always include the year alongside the series title in folder and file names, e.g. /Band of Brothers (2001)/Season 01/Band of Brothers (2001) - s01e01 - Currahee.mkv

From your description, it sounds as if you have failed to create the necessary folder structure per-show and per-season. Please follow the above link, which describes that as well.

Thanks for your reply! So I renamed one of the files to:

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964) - s01e01

Plex still didn’t recognize it.

I changed the parent directory to Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964) and still got nothing.

So, my directory hierarchy is as follows:

e:\Movies\TV Shows\Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964)\Season 1

What should it be changed too? Thanks!

To which folder in that hierarchy is your tv-show library linked?
It should point at e:\Movies\TV Shows\.

As a side note… I hope your movie library doesn’t point at e:\Movies\, which would end up with some recursive associations.

So, if I understand your question correctly, under Season 1 are all 32 episodes that were in that season. In the same folder that has Season 1, I have Season 2 through Season 4. None of which will pull into Plex.

And no, I actually have no references to the directory Movie. All my Plex references point to Movies/Action, Movies/Christmas, Movies/Martial Arts, etc. I have my movies/shows broken up into themes.

Mine is pretty simple

TV Shows/
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea/
Season 01/
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea - S01E01 - Eleven Days to Zero
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea - S01E02 - The City Beneath the Sea
.
. (note, you only really need S01E01 but the name of the show doesn’t hurt)
.
Season 02/
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea - S02E01 - Jonah and the Whale
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea - S02E02 - Time Bomb
.
.
and so on. Four Season folders in the main Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea folder. Each season folder has the shows for that season.

Well, tramp78, thanks for the response. I renamed files just like you had and it still didn’t work. I use Plex to get these files onto my phone so that I can watch them when I am away and it also allows my family to watch everything here at home. The only thing I know to do now is to find something else other than Plex to manage my files. And that sucks! I have been a lifetime member for years!

I am open to any ideas! Thanks!

With all this renaming etc you have done have you tried a plex dance?

If so and it’s still not working then server logs after the dance will help identify what might be failing for you.

try this. Create a new TV library in PLEX called TV TEST. Put that show’s folder in a folder called Test and aim that library at that folder. See what happens. I have text libraries for movies or TV shows that I use to get names figured out when I have issues or just want to watch something that isn’t shared with anyone.

An interesting thing is happening. I told Plex to delete the reference to the TV Show library and then I recreated it. It found all 4 seasons of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (but not all episodes). It also has only found 25 of the 39 of my TV series. So, on the one hand, things got better but on the other hand things got a lot worse.

Seems like, because I have not changed anything but my recent add, and am getting different results that this may be a code problem in Flex. As a software developer myself, this looks very suspicious!

I will let this finish rebuilding everything and then try the last two ideas recommended. Maybe some combo of things will make this work. Or maybe the software folks will figure out the code issue. (Adding files shouldn’t be this convoluted.)

Well I doubt it is a code issue when nobody else has the problem.

Yea, you may be right. Because I have not seen the code, I am just guessing.
