TV Show titles correct, but attached to wrong episodes

Courage the Cowardly Dog - 01x01 - A Night at the Katz Motel is the correct name, but the episode is “The Shadow of Courage”
almost all of the episodes are structured this way (correct title and format, but attached to the wrong episode)
How do I fix this?

Your naming is out of compliance:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200220687-Naming-Series-Season-Based-TV-Shows

A TV Show Library/
…Courage the Cowardly Dog/
…Season 01/
…Courage the Cowardly Dog - S01E01 - A Night at the Katz Motel.xxx

Produces:

FileBot (link in my signature) can handle naming and structuring for you automatically or manually in seconds.

What FileBot can’t do is remove possible embedded metadata in the Title Field of MP4/M4V files. Plex will read this info and prefer it over a perfect file name/structure (you don’t have any of those yet), but you can combat that situation by moving Local Media Assets to the bottom of every agent list you can find. All tabs in TV Show and Movies here:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200241558-Agents
Just drag LMA to the bottom of the list and drop it.
If you do have embedded metadata this will cure the issue, if you don’t it won’t matter. LMA will do what it has to from the bottom.

Renaming/restructuring is best performed OUTSIDE the library and you’ll need to write a new bundle for the show so The Plex Dance® was invented:

The Plex Dance®:

  1. remove show from library (yep, the whole thing)
  2. update library
  3. empty trash
  4. clean bundles
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200392106-Library-Actions <— update library, empty trash, clean bundles
  5. bring names and structures into compliance (FileBot is your friend)
  6. replace corrected show into library
  7. update library

All Steps. In Order. No Shortcuts.

I would love to use Filebot, but I don’t feel like paying 20 bucks, got a freeware version?

disregard previous post. “Courage the Cowardly Dog - 01x01 - A Night at the Katz Motel” is the format given by TheTVDB via FileBot

disregard that last post as well (is there no edit button here?) I changed the format to match what Plex wants.

“Courage the Cowardly Dog - S01E01 - A Night at the Katz Motel” but the episode is still wrong (the episode that plays direct from folder not through plex is “Courage the Cowardly Dog - S01E05 - Courage Meets Bigfoot”)

If I understand you right, then your files are labeled wrong.
You open the file named Courage the Cowardly Dog - S01E01 - A Night at the Katz Motel.ext with a desktop video player (not in Plex) and the episode that plays is Courage the Cowardly Dog - S01E05 - Courage Meets Bigfoot ?
Then this is not a Plex issue. Your files are named wrong.

Make sure you don’t have double-episode files or such.

yes that is correct. no matter how I put the files into Filebot, they all comeback named in the correct format, but not the correct episodes. I do not have doubles.

oh man, 4 entire seasons of manual renaming. crappy

With Filebot it is similar to a drag&drop procedure.
