Debugging logs attached
Bug description: When I add new weekly TV show episodes to Plex the server detects intros but does not add video preview thumbnail at add time. The server will sometimes add the video thumbnail a few days later during the nightly scheduled tasks. Sometimes the server will never add in the video thumbnails. The server & library in question has the correct settings both in the server & in the library to āgenerate video preview thumbnailsā when media is added.
Please investigate and let me know if this is a user error or a bug. Thanks!
Edit: This has been happening for several months now, ever since the ādetect introā feature was released. Iāve just been a tad lazy on reporting it and finally got around to it now. Iād say as far back as September or earlier of 2020 this was occuring.
do you have Debug logs disabled or did you remove the server logs? I donāt see any server logs in that zip file. (do not turn on āverboseā logging)
I had/have enabled debug logs under the general server settings and I downloaded the logs from app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/server/[myserverID]/manage/help via the ādownload logsā button.
I disabled debugging, re-enabled debugging. Removed some episodes, scanned, then added them back in, rescaned, still no video thumbnails, then redownloaded logs again. Hope itās what you need.
Weird that does not have it either. seem to be a few different ones missing. Are they all there in the actual folder? if you scroll down in the instructions to get logs to the section " Manually Finding Log Files" can you see if they are there.
I closed Plex, deleted logs, relaunched. Turns out an update was available. Iām now on Version 1.23.1.4571.
I did the same steps as above (removed episodes & putting back in) & now the server created the screenshots.
Iāve experienced this before where Plex will work ābestā after a fresh launch but wonāt once itās been running for several days/weeks. Iām sure this problem will continue into the future but for now please feel to close this thread. Iāll reopen later this week or next once I add shows again and thereās no video thumbnails created.
@BigWheel - This is definitely a bug, as can be seen in the following threads - @ChuckPa - any status updates to provide?
I provided a bunch of debug logs in the last thread.
@wdtvswns - The server will always generate thumbnails for new media after a plex restart, until the Scheduled Task runs - this is the bug that many of us have been trying to get Plex to fix for almost a year (like you mention.)
An alternative solution to restarting is:
Go to Library settings
Change āGenerate video preview thumbnailsā to Never.
Change āGenerate chapter thumbnailsā to Never.
Save The changes.
Change both the settings above back to āAs a scheduled task and when media is addedā
@BigWheel Whelp, as I suspected, it happened again.
Iāve attached logs during the episode add. The intro was detected but no video thumbnails produced. Oddly the server didnāt produce them even if I analyzed the show/season, which has worked earlier this week.
@Pow4Life181 Thank you for the additional information & links. I see the threads about manual analyze not working either.
The work around is helpful, thank you for that. It is ridiculous for Plex to expect a user to perform that every time a new episode is added though. Hereās to hoping staff can report back on why this is happening and open up a bug ticket to be worked on. Honestly Iād give up detect intro if I could have the auto thumbnail feature work reliably.
Completely agree @wdtvswns.
I wrote up a little script to automate flipping this setting back and forth. I run it right after my Scheduled Task window ends.
This issue does appear to be fixed in the latest version. I have not restarted Plex Media Server or changed the settings for several days and the preview thumbnails have been generating automatically for newly added content.
Setup:
Mac Mini 2012 running Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7
Plex Media Server Version 1.23.4.4712
