Hi,
I have a TV show that has 8 seasons. When I upload all the episdoes to my server, Plex display all the episodes on the screen. Can I create folders and sub folders on Plex so I can better organize my shows according to TV shows and seasons?
Take the title as it is used on TheTVDB. If there is something in parentheses, take that too. If the title contains invalid characters (depends on your file system), like § : % *, simply leave them out.
Check the naming and the folder structure of your show. Name the top folder of the show exactly after the title on TheTVDB. No abbreviations. No additional subfolders. No aliases. Add the (year) in parentheses when episode 1 of season 1 of this show was aired.
Name the episode files according to the above linked naming guide. Use the same title as for the top folder. Show's Title - s01e01 - additional info.ext (â- additional infoâ can be left out)
After you corrected the naming and folder structure, perform the Plex Dance with all files for this show.
Plex picked up the TV Showâs name fine. What Iâm trying to do is kind of a like a Netflix style where you scroll around for the show or movie you want to watch. Letâs say I want to watch the Walking Dead. So on the screen, you will see a poster of the Walking Dead show along with all the other shows. You click the Walking Dead poster and now you see Season 1, Season 2, etc. You click Season 1 and in there you see lets say 10 episodes. You click the first episode and you start watching the first show. Thatâs what I am trying to achieve here on my Plex. Instead of the Netflix style, I see all the episodes shown on the screen. I prefer it to be in a tree-like structure that breaks down your show according to season, episodes. Do you know what I mean?
That is exactly how Plex works when it is set up correctly and when the shows are named correctly.
In case the above confused you this is a somewhat simplified guide:
. . . . .
TV Shows <- The TV library points here
_______ShowName (year)
____________Season 01
__________________ShowName (year) - s01e01 - Optional Name.ext
__________________ShowName (year) - s01e02 - Optional Name.ext
__________________and so on for the shows in season 01
____________Season 02 <- just like Season 01
____________Season 03 <- and so on for each season
____________Season 00 <- or âSpecialsâ
__________________ShowName (year) - s00e01 - Optional name
__________________ShowName (year) - s00e02 - Optional name
__________________and so on for each special
Note: the eXX part of the specials must match EXACTLY what is found in TheTVDB
You can try other setups BUT Plex is very picky about TV show structure and it is best not to fight the great Plexisaurus.
. . . . .
It didnât work. I named my folder and files like this:
TV Shows <- The TV library points here
_______ShowName (year)
____________Season 01
__________________ShowName (year) - s01e01 - Optional Name.ext
__________________ShowName (year) - s01e02 - Optional Name.ext
__________________and so on for the shows in season 01
____________Season 02 <- just like Season 01
____________Season 03 <- and so on for each season
____________Season 00 <- or âSpecialsâ
__________________ShowName (year) - s00e01 - Optional name
__________________ShowName (year) - s00e02 - Optional name
__________________and so on for each special
Another word:
TV Show
â Star Trek: The Next Generation
ââ-Season01
âââ-Star Trek: The Next Generation - s01e01.mp4
âââ-Star Trek: The Next Generation - s01e02.mp4
EtcâŠ
and it still didnât work. Plex displays all the episodes, all seasons on the screen instead of breaking it down by the main TV show title, then seasons followed by the episodes for each season.
The only thing that jumps out at me here is that your Season directories should have a space in them. So âSeason 01â is correct, âSeason01â is not.
Sorry for asking the obvious, but did you create a âTV Showsâ-type library?
What you want to do doesnât work in a âMoviesâ-type of library.
In Plex you need to separate movies and tv show content strictly and put them into separate libraries, optimized for the content type.
Itâs not enough to merely put the shows in a separate directory thatâs part of your main Movies library, you actually have to create a separate library in Plex for TV Shows and point it at your TV Shows directory. That will cause it to organize it by season, as you desire (assuming you have the options for the library set to show seasons, as mentioned by TeknoJunky).
I am so embarrassed. Azinck, you are so right. When I was starting out with Plex, I didnât quite know what I was doing. So I created a movie category and renamed it TV shows. And when I dumped all my TV shows there, it doesnât recognize seasons because itâs still a movie category. I changed it now. Created a TV show category and it worked. Plex display seasons now. Haha⊠Ok, it is done. Thank you all very much!!!
