TV-Y7-FV is a thing that exists

As mentioned in this post that was closed due to no response, Plex does not properly handle the TV-Y7-FV rating. Any content restricted account - even Teen which allows TV-13 - will not display shows with that rating. There does not appear to be a way to configure what ratings PLEX is aware of nor how to handle them. This is effectively a bug report, but I don’t know where else to submit it.

Hopefully it will have better luck than the other post.

I too hope you have better luck than I!

What show do you have that is TV-Y7-FV?

Keep in mind that Plex gets the content rating from either TheTVDB or TheMovieDB. I don’t think either of these uses the “…-FV” descriptor.

Thanks for your reply.

The show is The Amazing World of Gumball. Looking on TheTVDB it is set as TV-Y7, but in my library it was automatically set to TV-Y7-FV, and the rating in IMDB also lists FV. It’s been a while since I ripped the DVD but I guess maybe the ripper placed the rating in the video stream somehow? Not sure how it got set, TBH, as my Plex is still set to use TVDB as the Agent. It is odd that TVDB would choose not to use the actual rating of the show, but it looks like you are right - TheTVDB does not use that rating that I can tell. However, that doesn’t really mean that the rating doesn’t exist and that the rating can’t find its way in to Plex automatically. And it is a rating that definitely exists.

If I had fat fingered an incorrect rating while manually editing the show metadata, that would be one thing, and on me, but this is a legitimate rating, automatically added by either an agent or ripping software, and I honestly don’t see why Plex is so adamant about not just supporting it. Honestly, Plex could just as easily ignore anything after (and including) the second dash - it doesn’t actually have to support anything beyond the TV-XX format specifically as the additional info is irrelevant for parental controls unless you wish to restrict a type of content (Fantasy Violence) in addition to a specific rating. That is, it would be nice if Plex recognized it for those that would like to keep FV out of their younger child’s stream, but my problem is the opposite - Plex omits any rating it doesn’t recognize from all managed accounts, which seems like it was done to err on the side of caution (if someone got cheeky and decided to manually label some porn as “XXXX”, you wouldn’t want it showing in your child’s library, but again, it is ignoring a valid rating that it really should know as it has been around for over a decade. It’s frustrating.

We don’t use IMDB so this is irrelevant.

To be clear, the “TV-Y7-FV” is not actually a rating. The “FV” is what’s called a content descriptor. This can be added to any of the ratings and there are others descriptors too. We would need to support seeing any/all of these in the rating.

If you read what I said, while it might be nice for some people if it allowed Parental Controls to recognize the content descriptors and categorize them as the parent sees fit, what I’m asking for at a minimum is that Plex recognizes that content descriptors exist and might be present in a rating. However, it doesn’t. Plex sees them as a distinct rating (that it just so happens to not understand), which by your own admission is wrong as they are not a rating. So Plex needs a bug fix to properly handle content descriptors by ignoring them, but NOT ignore the rating they are attached to.

I understand. I’m bringing this up with the team.
