TVDB Episode 'Directors' Metadata not downloaded to Plex

Server Version#: Version 1.18.4.2171
Player Version#: Version 4.18.1

I’ve been doing some cleanup & restructuring of my libraries on my NAS and today I noticed that the Directors metadata is not downloading for episodes from TVDB. Seems to be a problem for every show. Writers is downloading okay and other metadata for the show/episodes seem okay.

I’ll use Stargate SG1 as example using its first episode. In plex this is what is downloaded after being matched with TVDB …

… you can see Written by is downloaded but not Directed by. Checking on TVDB it should be Mario Azzopardi.

Anyone else seeing this … ?

PMS for Mac v 1.18.4.2171
Plex for Mac v 1.4.1.940-574c2fa7

Plex Web via Safari for Mac v 4.18.1

Have you tried a different browser without extensions? Just a thought.

Thanks for checking, interesting thought but alas did not resolve the problem. Tried both Chrome and Firefox using empty browsers cache’s.

If you do a force refresh of the metadata of Stargate and then edit a episode is director still shown under tags ?

I just found this topic for 20+ days ago which could be related …

@anon18523487 just wondering if anyone else has seen this. I just refreshed Stargate-SG1 now and attached the logs if you have some time to take a look in the coming days.

Plex Media Server Logs_2020-01-14_19-03-06.zip (1.2 MB)

Anyone any suggestions as to what might be causing this ?

Anyone had a chance to look into this – I’m still seeing the same behaviour

I saw this in the Plex Media Player v2.49.0 new release notes:

  • Fixed metadata line height issue on some preplay pages

I know your issue is with the Plex web client but I wondered if this affects your issue? It just sounds too close to what you’re seeing. Dunno.

Thanks for checking but alas don’t think that is the same issue as if I edit the episode and select tags I can see directors is empty …

… I suspect this could be related to the somewhat recent API changes from TVDB and that overtime it will get fixed (hoping). Also, considering the radio silence from the usual plex support staff who are active on here kinda makes me think its a known issue !

Would anyone have any idea why this is happening ? I’m still seeing this problem and was hoping that overtime it would resolve itself but has not. I have tried a full clean setup of plex deleting all files, libraries and metadata (starting from scratch/clean) and still experience this.

To summarize, core problem is that all my TV series are missing metadata for directors. Also, while Writers is populated with data if I try and filter on it nothing is displayed.

I have an update on this issue (which is still happening even with server version 1.18.6.2348 …

My TV Agent is setup as follows …

which has local and TVDB in that order. Local is used for subtiles and some artwork but all files have metadata scrubbed from the mkv/mk4 files.

Using this configuration the directors metadata is NEVER downloaded for any TV show, it just never works. So I change the configuration to add TMDB also as a third meta source (see below)

and when I do that the director metadata is then downloaded (but from TMDB and not TVDB).

This, while it does populate the fields in plex is not really a workaround as the underlining issue still remains. This specific data is NOT fetched from TVDB and I’m really just using TMDB as a fallback.

I would appreachiate if someone from the plex team would at least raise an internal bug on their side and fix it when it makes sense within their schedules.

I’ve tested this using SG-1, and I can confirm that I do not see the director field getting populated. Let me check if this is a Plex or TheTVDB issue.

Thanks. As a matter of interest if you filter on a writer does it work for you? Just click on a writer for any episode.

Reason I ask is that I suspect it could be related.

Ah, the director and writer filters do not work. Though it makes sense. The writer and director info is for episodes, not a show, and those filters only appear at the show level, so there is a disconnect there. Those filters should be at the episode level. I’ll file this with the team, but lets keep this discussion about the missing data.

@anon18523487 just checking if there is any update on the director missing data for TV shows ? Thanks.

No update.

Months and months pass by and still no fix! This really cannot be that complicated to fix, fetch the right data and store locally.

This is yet another example of why customers are so frustated with plex development.
