tvOS13 siri remote loses connection

Server Version#: 1.17.0.1841
Player Version#: 2.8

After upgrading by tvOS 13 (which wasn’t done by me, it upgraded itself) and then playing a video, the siri remote disconnects just after an hour of the remote not being used. This only happens on the Plex app on Apple TV and not on any of the other apps such as Netflix, Amazon Prime or even streaming my desktop from my Macbook.
Have also tried the usual pairing tricks, and even reinstalled the entire Apple TV. Checking that others have encountered this problem.

I would hazard a guess that there is something in tvOS 13 that disconnects the remote when not being used that hasn’t been turned off when watching videos in the Apple TV app.

You can disable automatic tvOS system updates in the Apple TV settings (under System).

By Siri remote do you mean using the Apple TV remote with the voice/Siri feature?

Thanks but the upgrade is already done, i have no plans to attempt to downgrade as I’m not even sure Apple allows that.

Yeah, the Siri remote is what it’s called on the Apple website for the remote that comes with the 4th generation and 4K Apple TV. It disconnects just after an hour of watching a video.

I wasn’t suggesting any such thing. But if you want to prevent auto updates of tvOS, you can.

I’ll do some testing tonight. I use Harmony myself and only occasionally use the ATV remote.

So I wasn’t able to replicate this behavior on my AppleTV 4K using the Siri remote, Plex v on PMS v.1.17, Plex app v2.9 (beta release).

I started a 2-hour movie with the remote, let it play for 1 hour and 17 minutes undisturbed; picked up the remote and hit pause. I immediately got the “remote connected” message on the screen and the movie paused.

If this issue for you persists once you have 2.9 installed post again and we’ll see if we can’t think of some next steps.

Thanks for taking the time to test it.

But I do think you have missed the point a little, as you have said that you “remote connected” when you leave it over an hour. I get that as well.

The problem is that it shouldn’t be disconnected in the first place, as before the tvOS 13 install this never happened on my Apple TV, mine is not the 4K version by the way.

I’m not sure from your description of the test, if you watched the movie the entire time to notice the remote disconnects warning or just let it run.

I’ll wait for the new version to see if this fixed but judging by your test on the beta version, I’m not hopeful.

Thanks for your help though.

I assumed that by disconnect you also mean unresponsive. If it still responds, what difference does it make?

It does respond, the difference that makes is that I don’t want to see the disconnect warning an hour in to watching any of my videos. Something I find distracting.

And as this never used to happen it’s obviously a bug somewhere in the app with the tvOS upgrade, and as I’m a Plex Pass subscriber I would expect these bugs to be fixed when reported.

Gotcha; okay will retest this weekend!

So, I haven’t had a chance to test this in Plex but I did experience it in another app on the ATV (ChannelsDVR). I’ll point the devs to this thread…

+1 noticed this issue as well with tvos 13. i wanted to scrub to a different point in timeline by clicking trackpad, but it wouldn’t respond. had to click one of the buttons first.

to wake appletv from sleep with tvos13, you have to click one of the buttons now as it ignores trackpad clicks. i wonder if this has something to do with the appletv ignoring trackpad clicks after some period of time.

I have also found other apps like VLC is affected too.

I confirm that I am having the same annoying issue.
After updating to ios 13 it pops up that the siri remote lost connection after 1hour of watching a movie.

I have the apple tv on ethernet and the hot spot is on the 5Ghz band.

Hi,

Has there been any development on this yet, as I still have the same problem. I was wandering whether a fix had been scheduled into a road map or something.

Thanks

I also have this issue. One hour in I get the annoying message that the remote has disconnected.

I’ve gotten this with other apps as well…

I’ve got the same problem. Really annoying. I don’t use my physical remote anymore. I use the iPhone App “Remote” instead. No stupid message anymore!
