Tweak Collection Hiding Feature

When using the Collection Plex currently allows a number of different options for optimal library management. A user can choose to hide collections, show collections but hide items in collections, or show both the collection and the items within. You can set these options per collection or for the whole library.

The above a fantastic options to have but I’ve found them a bit limiting in certain scenarios.

As I see it you can use Plex Collections for mainly two different categories of collections:

  1. Franchise Collections: Sequels, Trilogies, Shared Universes, etc.
  2. Broad Collections: Genres, Themes, IMDB Top 250, Rolling Stoner Top 100 TV Shows, TV Networks, etc.

In my library my family often finds it difficult to navigate because the choice is overwhelming (to them), what I’d like to do is be able to contract/hide items within Franchise collections. This way I don’t have 10 Spider-Man entries or 4 Godfather entries, I just have one of each.

But I also have a few Broad Collections, like the IMDB Top 250 or Super Hero Movies, that I would like to show both the collection and items within, as I don’t want those items lost to obscurity. As an example I still want Shawshank to show up as a library entry.

But if an item is in both those types of collections a conflict arises. Ex. Showing all the items in the IMDB collection will negate the setting picked for The Godfather collection, and those items will show back up in the library view. To re-hide The Godfather collection I must hide all the items in the IMDB one.

Ideally the Library Default setting should be applied to all Collections (with Default as the selected option), but if a certain collection has another option selected that option should override the default even if an item appears in both. In the example above I’d set the Library setting to “Show collection and its items”, the IMDB collection would be set to “Default”, and The Godfather collection would be set to “show collection, hide items in collection”. So all The Godfather items would be hidden but any other items in the IMDB collection will still remain visible.

Is something like this possible? If it is it would be tremendous help for library organization!
