Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS w/ HD OTA Tuner

I am ready to add an HD OTA Tuner to my Plex setup. I may watch some live programming, but for the most part want DVR functionality (record for later viewing, and remove or skip commercials).

I also want to highlight that Plex server (Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS) server is “headless” (it is a laptop with a bad video card or display). I have a NAS that I would like to save the files to. The NAS is already mounted on my Plex server.

I have looked at the list of Supported DVR Tuners and Antennas, but would like a recommendation. I think that a dual-tuner model would be fine. Do I need a model with built-in transcoding?

Being able to purchase on Amazon would be a huge plus for me. Not sure if we are allowed to talk price on these forums, but the Hauppauge WinTV-dualHD seems to offer a great value. Is that the best option?

I have setup plex with DVR using the HDHome run connect dual tuner. It works right out of the box minimal setup. this is a stand alone unit on your network so outher devices can access the tuner to.

I purchased a refurb Silicondust HDHomeRun Connect purchased directly to test how everything would work and loved it so much that I grabbed a used Silicondust HDHomeRun Prime off ebay. I’m hooked. They both have several apps that dial into them directly or I can use the Plex server as a receiver. Because there are like 4 apps or the web interface it doesn’t matter what my wife clicks on, she will be able to access the TV. Some of the apps it’s easier to find your station than others but they all work.

The two things I will mention is that the ebay device needed a firmware updated which was very easy once I downloaded the software but it took a few minutes to figure out what was going on. Plex currently only allows 1 TV guide per server currently so having 2 separate video sources with different guides requires 2 servers which both use a single NAS for storage. I’m really happy that I can put these boxes anywhere and watch TV on everything anywhere.
