[Ubuntu] Transcoded files fail on playback

For my plex setup I have a server running unraid that exposes shares on my network.  I have an Ubuntu pc that has plex installed, this PC mounts those shares and they are added as libraries in plex. Any file that can direct stream seems to do just fine.  But any file that plex attempts to transcode appears to fail. When I play a file that fails, the plex log always seems to have an entry like the following:

I should also mention that if I try to play the file directly, it works just fine.

I have been having the same problem with the same setup. When I log into my ubuntu machine running on my vmware host I see that the transcoder failed. It usually takes a reboot of the the ubuntu plex machine to get the videos playing again. I just updated to the current version of Plex today but it has been happing for the last 6-8 months worth of releases for me. Please let me know if I can assist with this to provide logs etc.

As this thread is 10 months old it would be helpful if you could post your log file.
How much free HDD space do you have available to the transcode temp folder?

Free space is not an issue, multiple TiB.

I’ve been able to circumvent the problem by playing the file without subtitles, so I inspected the subtitles files and they were encoded using UTF8 with BOM. Converting files to UTF8 resolved my problem and I could play the file.

How can we eventually fix this in a permanent way ? Could Plex Media Transcoder handle that and convert files on the fly ?

For what it’s worth, here’s how I fixed all my library in one go :

cd path/to/your/media/library
sed -i '' '1 s/^\xef\xbb\xbf//' ./*/*/*.srt

The ./*/*/*.srt part will work because my library is organized like this :
<show name>/<season ##>/<show name> - <S##><E##> - <episode name.srt>

I just stumbled onto this thread, looked at the log file and found something which, while not having direct impact on Plex that I know of currently, will help ‘clean up’ your media if you’re a purist and also access your media through other players like VLC.

In mkvmerge, you can disable the track statistics being written. In the gui, the ‘extra options’ and you can also set it in preferences. “–disable-track-statistics-tags”

Lastly, for those videos where the title is something unwanted or influencing Plex or another player, you can clear it:

mkvpropedit -s title="" filename.mkv

If your videos have ‘und’ as the language for the video or audio track, and you wish to put your native language (eng in my case):

mkvpropedit "$1" --edit track:a1 --set language=eng
mkvpropedit "$1" --edit track:v1 --set language=eng

To the other issue : I had the problem reproduce yesterday eve while trying to play a file with embedded subtitles (mkv).

Anyone has an idea how to check if :
A) The embedded subs are encoded with “UTF8 with BOM” ?
B) The temporary generated srt from the transcode is encoded with “UTF8 with BOM” ?
C) There is a way to convert embedded subtitles’s inside the mkv file ?
D) Plex could be running under an incompatible LANG* env vars ?

FYI, I’m running FreeNAS 9.3, inside a jail (not the plugin).

By default, Plex does not set locale variables. It assumes they are in your .profile/.login and set when you log in or you will set them system-global.

Environment variables of interest are:

export LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8
export LANG=en_US.UTF-8
export LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8

*edit as appropriate to your locale.

you may also use mkvtoolnix to strip or extract a subtitle ‘stream’ from a MKV.

I had a look in the service file for plexmediaserver_plexpass (FreeNAS) and these declarations are present :

export LC_ALL="en_US.UTF-8"
export LANG="en_US.UTF-8"

Could the absence of export LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8 be an issue ? Again, I guess not as I have several files with accented names and the like and never had any issue with these…

I’ve found some interesting stuff about “cleaning” mkv files here and here. I’ll look into these later. anyway I still have no idea why plex fails playing these subtitles. I think Plex should handle this more nicely.

Regarding the last occurence of the issue, using mkvtoolnix I was able to figure out that the subtitles track of my file (which looks like making Plex fail) was in “forced”. I removed the flag and was able to select another or no subtitles track and it worked.

What else can I do to help devs find out what the real issue is ?

Yes, Plex does handle the internals and should not have such an issue, I will bump this thread up to have it checked in further detail.

With ‘Forced’ subtitles, that is strange. I’ve not experienced it but, again, will bump it up as well.

There will be follow on answers here.

I found a previously closed (due to no logfiles from the user) about a possible regression with UTF8 vs UTF8 with BOM and am researching further

There is a closed, due to lack of sample data, issue. A possible regression in UTF8 vs UTF8 with BOM subtitle tagging.

Further research is showing that as much information (logfile) as you can share is very helpful.

If you have the time to turn up the verbosity, stop plex, clear all the logs, start plex, and run a test case known to fail, stop plex, and then post up the logs so we have an isolated case… That would be VERY helpful.

Also, the info from ‘mkvinfo’ or ‘mkvtoolnix’ which shows what is seen provides the comparison.

Please be certain to uncheck Settings -> Server -> Show Advanced -> Allow Plex Media Server tokens in logs

This will ensure no private data is posted.

Hi !

Please find log files attached and the result from mkvinfo.

Steps followed :

  1. service plexmediaserver_plexpass stop
  2. echo “” > Plex Media Server.log
  3. service plexmediaserver_plexpass start
  4. Open plex web in chrome
  5. Navigate to the episode
  6. See that have “Français”, “Français (external)”, “English (external)”.
  7. Select “Français (external)”
  8. Click play (-> Plex fails)
  9. Click back to get back to the episode
  10. Select “Français”
  11. Click play (-> Plex works)
  12. service plexmediaserver_plexpass stop

I’m not sure whether Plex is failing to play the embedded subtitles or the external ones, as there is no subtitle files along with the mkv, so I guess it’s the automatic subtitles downloaded from OpenSubtitles.

Thank you for that. It’s VERY helpful. For that particular movie, would you please attach the SRT (Subtitles) file so we can check it? This is an issue previously seen but no data was ever sent when it was first encountered.
