UK Channel Issues - 19 DAVE / 25 YESTDAY and other EPG issues

Plex does allow this, but SchedulesDirect does not create an xml feed for Plex to use.

SchedulesDirect supports the UK (ironically, using Gracenote) so you’d go back to exactly how it was before this Plex EPG fiasco.

I use SD myself, but it does not create an xmltv feed. You can, however, do either of the following:

  • Use mc2xml …to create the feed for PlexTV (not supported by SD)
  • Use NextPVR …instead of Plex DVR (officially authorised by SD)
  • Use other similar scripts / apps

I do the 2nd one.

[edited to make the options clearer as well as my choice. Thanks @paulsalter ]

yup when i used to run Win7MCE SD was great and much more full featured than the flakey Win7 epg.

Its a shame there is no native SD support, and that we have to deleted the DVR when doing any EPG changes

I would take the old Plex(Gracenote) epg in a heart beat. Its seriously affecting the WAF and I’ve been getting it in the ear as to why tv episodes are appearing in movie listings.

@sa2000 and others, a belated hello!!
Well, I’m devastated at the moment as my Plex server PSU blew 6 days ago, but getting a new one once we’ve moved, plus a new’ish CPU, aiming to get the i7 3770k plus a Quadro GPU.
As for FreeView where we’re moving to some installers are saying we can’t get Wenvoe, but Freeview have said their only using a prediction coverage service and installers are twp (Thick in Welsh) in using their prediction, Freeviews words not mine! So, till I’ve got the 800w PSU and upgrades I’m out of the picture… Sorry for the pun :grinning:
I am keeping updated though with the forums and watching how it’s all panning out. My girlfriend is missing Plex as she can’t watch her “Are you being served” and other stored media, but she’s happy to go with what I’m purchasing soon.
I’ll be back once we’re settled in, and have a writing TV antenna to!! Hopefully get Wenvoe, being a radio ham, predictive antenna plots are like Mark Zuckerbergs AI… Both stupid!!

Dave

Yep, me too. TOTALLY, COMPLETELY UNUSABLE!!!

Total loss now of all guide data for:

  • BBC1
  • BBC2
  • ITV1
  • ITV2
  • ITV3
  • Film4
  • Film4+1
  • More4
  • Drama
  • Five US
  • ITV Be
  • ITV2+1
  • 5Star
  • Paramount
  • ITV1+1
  • Channel 5+1

I’ve done a full manual refresh at least 3 times. No change.

A complete and utter omnishambles. By comparison, this makes Brexit look competent.

Yup. Just checked mine too.

This isn’t even ‘beta’ release worthy, more like ‘alpha’ pre release.

The epg is degenerating into a hot mess.

Don’t know where to go from here. So disappointed.

Doesn’t anyone know the state of emby dvr? Might try to pursue a refund with plex due to this mess and move.

Ah, it seems that it’s not just a Plex issue, I thought I’d connect one of my FreeView tuners up to my Xbox One for testing, and their guide has some Unknown airings in there to!! I’m trying to find out who Microsoft use for their EPG data, but it stands a chance of being TiVo also!! I can’t see this being fixed imho, especially on the M$ side of things, ah well, it was nice to test it though!! I’m going back under the radar for another few weeks… Till I’ve got the items for the server!!

Dave

Personally, I wouldnt recommend using Schedules Direct in Plex, as it could lead to them removing your account

From what i understand
Schedules Direct is for non commercial software (list of s/w on their website)
Gracenote is the provider for commercial software (which is why Plex & Emby use/d this, Emby moved over from SD when it became commercial)
SD & Gracenote ae the same company, just different usage rights

Totally agreed. But ShedulesDirect does integrate with NextPVR which is what I am actually doing.

Thats exactly what i do

I used NextPVR before Plex DVR existed, so i just moved my schedules back over to NextPVR

As Plex DVR seems to be getting worse, not better, I cant see me moving back any time soon

did not know that - good info, thanks!

So to clarify, are you using Next PVR on its own or routing the data into the Plex DVR?

tia

Kev

I use NextPVR standalone, but Plex looks at the folders

Within NextPVR I have 2 recording locations set
F:\Recorded TV & F:\Recorded Movies
I then set my recordings to go to the relevant one

For these I have a Plex library for each
F:\Recorded TV is a TV library, the other one set as a movie library

Works perfectly, I only use these extra libraries as i like to keep my ripped media seperate from recordings

@el_tigro my setup is identical to @paulsalter (only the directories are named slightly different).

Plex is therefore the player and NextPVR is the recorder (DVR).

Cool thanks for that. Currently running Plex in an unraid docker. The ever pressure to keep the wife happy and not changing things around. She moaned when we moved from Win7MCE around six months ago.

All grand until Plex started with the EPG switcheroo.

I’d really like to know if we are in transition for EPGs, or this ‘is it’ - the current EPG is useless for a PVR - aside from the errors, basic data isn’t there (movies no longer have genres).

It might be possible to live with the EPG currently, if there was an end in sight - ‘sorry its really bad, but it will get better’ would go a long way.

Personally, I think this it it - an unmitigated disaster.

I cannot live with it, even temporarily, as I have lost episodes within seasons that I cannot get back (at least not unless there is a re-run).

They have stopped supporting some countries (incl. Australia) who now have to use an alternative/external xml feed. I assume these are countries that TiVo don’t support. In retrospect, maybe they are lucky being forced to find an external solution and not be dragged through this train-crash that we are still enduring.

Don’t forget, Plex is using us, paying customers, to find these problems ourselves.

So we’re 5 weeks in - sometimes going forward, often going back, but never actually being useable. I think this is a losing battle for Plex, despite the efforts of a few (@sa2000 et al).

Remember, Plex has not even officially acknowledged the problem and still advertises its DVR functionality as part of Plex Pass.

I asked @elan - CTO and co-founder - to comment yesterday. He has yet to reply.

A few things:

  • First of all, I’m very sorry you’re having issues with the Plex DVR. Obviously we want this to work perfectly for everyone.
  • To that point, we’re working as we speak on a number of different things: 1) working with TiVo to correct faulty data 2) fixing bugs and improving our cloud EPG 3) fixing bugs and improving the server side of the DVR which consumes that EPG.
  • Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, it’s unfair and inaccurate to conclude that things are worse for every single DVR user. The reality of the situation is complex—there are thousands of lineups around the world, and both Gracenote and TiVo have different sources & methods in each of the areas. For some set of people, the data is better; for others, the quality is about the same; and for an unfortunate third set, the data is worse.

Bottom line—we’re working hard to make things better within the confines of what we can improve.

I did acknowledge this new issue - here

and

and

and also here UK Freeview EPG - #5 by sa2000

A fix is being worked on and the data is being corrected. It is duplicate entries in our data which need to be removed and the update process is being looked into to stop this from arising - the old entries not being removed sometimes

Does anyone want to be a tester for an xmltv file import for Freeview UK?

PM me if you would like to try … (I’m not in UK so can’t test myself).
