UK EPG status

@sa2000

I have been trying to get the answer to @speedyrite’s question by looking through the various threads, but there are so many, I can no longer work out what is what.

Can you please give a simple statement on where we are? For example.

  • Are most channels now OK? (80%, 90%)
  • Is there still a lot of work to do?
  • Are fixes sticking now or are we still seeing things go backwards?
  • is the hour-out issue fixed?
  • Is the season/episode issue fixed?

The channels I personally care about the most are:
011 Pick
013 E4
014 Film4
018 More4
019 Dave
020 Drama
021 5 USA
028 E4 +1

thanks,
James.

Looking at the first channel you mention, Pick
Currently airing Highway Patrol, according to Plex it originally aired today

It originally aired 1st Sept 2014

Not a good start when the first channel/show checked is wrong

Similar with many shows,

The continued high-volume of threads regarding issues with DVR and EPG functionality is making me stay well away from using it. This sort of thing has to be absolutely rock solid for production use and its obviously a long way from that at th moment.

@paulsalter - ugh, thanks for letting me know though - I guess I should have done that myself, but was rather hoping it was in a better way by now.

…sticking with NextPVR for another month…

Agreed. I stopped using Plex’s EPG weeks ago but have been watching the forums with one eye.

Honestly, I don’t see an end to this in the near term and worry that these problems will be ongoing forever (i.e. never rock solid).

At what point does Plex’s continual advertising of Plex Pass (with EPG) become fraud?

I think the problem is

For many users (outside the forums), they just see that the EPG looks correct, has a date or a S/E so just accept it
It’s only when you actually look at the data provided you see it’s wrong

If you scroll through the EPG for the current time and look at anything date based, you will find lots that have todays date on them, I would guarantee the majority will be wrong

Yes, I think you’re probably right.

As Plex only raises a ticket to TiVo after a user highlights a fault (rather than systematically and proactively scrubbing the data themselves), we are all reliant on ourselves.

This leads me to believe the data will ever become good as:

  • eventually those users will become weary of having to do this and will stop.
  • our approach isn’t systematic and cannot be co-ordinated

The problem is, there is not alternative UK EPG XMLTV stream that we can use in Plex, so the solution is to not use Plex at all.

This is the biggest issue, IMO

I have just had a scroll through the EPG for the next 2 hours, there are over 50 errors that i can see by just looking (mainly wrong dates)

I just dont have the time to report all of these (or patience, lol)

especially as you know it is already too late for those 2 hours; thinking about it, the furthest day out (is that 2 or 3 weeks) is already too late for Plex/TiVo to respond in time.

[edit: typos]

Exactly
If I wanted to record one of them shows, it would be recorded with incorrect data, so i would have to manually rename

I still believe Plex should be spending time checking the EPG, make sure it is mainly correct, then when the occasion error is spotted it can be reported
Only fixing issues when the get reported is backwards for me, normally i wouldnt notice an error until i tried to watch/record something, by then it’s too late

Wonder what the difference is between Tivo & Gracenote/Schedules Direct, If one can provide the data, so should the other

chalk and cheese.

I am using SchedulesDirect(GraceNote) with NextPVR and it works fine (as it did when Plex was with GraceNote).

I’ve more or less given up using plex for recording - which is a shame, as before the EPG issues, I was using it much more than catch up.

I keep checking in, finding a bunch of issues, reporting them, getting bored with the overly complex reporting form and giving up.

Films don’t have categories anymore, ‘recommended for you’ (which was passable at best) is no longer worth looking at and I can’t search for Genres in shows…

In 2005 I was using Eyetv which was (from an EPG view) streets ahead of where we are now - 14 years ago :frowning: so sad to see where we have got to.

Thankfully I have a decent media library to watch through plex.

This is registered as an issue and will be addressed - the original date for the Series (The TV Show) is not being picked up at the moment and defaulting to current year

Should be - but see my note concerning episode/season

There is a backlog of reported issues to be processed

I would say most are. We had the overlapping airings issue come back but the fix that went in today should stop it happening

This would be channel / region specific and is not a general issue, As far as I know the issues with the channels reported as having this problem are now fixed.

Our provider has been proactively checking and correcting the sequencing of the currently airing series on channels 1 to 5 in the UK. Others will be addressed after that. Soaps are still to be addressed

could you list these in priority order - top first

Thanks and here you are. As a reminder, I am Freeview Meridian/Central OTA Broadcast

Thanks for your reply and I also note @paulsalter’s comment re air dates.

Do you have an approximate response time now from Tivo (eg: after your research, TivI can turn it around in 2 days)?

Thanks,
James.

@sa2000 I do really appreciate the amount of work that is going into this - you specifically seem to be taking a lot of this on.

This sort of communication does help to see what is happening, and that things are being dealt with

My personal top channel is 081 Talking Pics and also getting the categories re-enabled.

Personally if channels are taking priority, I would prefer it based on most well known/popular

1 to 5 (101 to 105) get fixed first
Spin off channels from these providers next
Then the rest

I don’t think that @sa2000 has just made my priority the priority as it is anyhow specific to my OT region (Meridian/Central).

I rather assumed it was just the order to check for me as it will take a while
