Unable to access media server remotely, VPN related

Greetings,

I am unable to see my media server remotely from my android (or any client).  The server says it is mapped to port 443 (the only port that I can get it to map to), but thats as far as it gets.

When I login to my plex, it doesn't show the server in green lettering.

It's almost like it connects/maps, but then thats it.

My VPN provider is BoxPN if it matters.

Unless you have done this already, i suggest you break the problem into two

1. Get remote access through port forwarding in the router to work and access via myPlex through the internet outside the local network

2. once 1 is addressed and working - then bring in how to get it to work through vpn

Sorry, I can't believe I didn't mention it works fine without the VPN.

edit;  also works fine on a separate computer that's on the same LAN without the VPN.

Well you did imply in the topic of the thread but not spelled out in the text.

I have no experience of configuring vpn with plex so will have to leave it for others to step in and help you

In the meantime have a read of these 3 threads - the 2nd may be more useful but please do read all 3 threads if you have not done so already

Further info - have a look at yet another problem resolved by removing vpn : link

You will realize when you go through the forums that plex and vpn do not work well together and the standard answer you get when there are problems and vpn is found to be used is to disable / remove the vpn. So probably this means that you will need to look for the solution yourself picking on snippets of information that people may have said that may find you a way for plex and vpn to co-exist

Sigh, that stinks.

I have a dedicated media PC that is always connected via VPN.

In order to stream media via plex I suppose I will have to leave my other PC running, aw well...  It has a haswell chip (apparently really good on power usage), if I turn off the monitor also it should save quite a bit of juice... :D

You may find some users who have succeeded with vpn and plex. In fact the thread I highlighted does show here that vpn is sometimes OK. Just saying that it will not be a straightforward and you may not get it working in the end.

Yes we are keeping the PMS machines awake all the time. There are threads relating to wake up on lan / wan and feature requests and some backdoor ways of achieving it

Has anyone be able to get VPN working with myplex. I use btguard pptp or openvpn. I tried adding routes im cmd on windows 7 with the 3 myplex ips mask 255 and my routers ip but, when publishing i still get could not connect

Looking at this from a different angle do you ned to use VPN? If its just for remote access cant you just port forward and change the PMS login requirement?

i want to use my vpn. but, cannot access plex if that computer is connected to vpn. i do not care if plex goes through the vpn especially with https coming soon. i just want to be able to use my vpn without losing plex remotely.
