Unable to access server after password reset

The plex thing is already in the up arrow box. I have selected Plex Media Server, then Open at least 50 times tonight. Nothing ever happens

I feel this will be out of your depth, so grab a local teenager to help you with it. I don’t have the time to teach you how to use Windows.

I do wish you the best of luck though.

No. I do not take orders

Hi ChuckPa

Thought it might have been a busy day for you yesterday.

So I see the bit you uninstall Plex choosing first option to keep files but because you said I only have 5 minutes to reinstall the same package that was installed because I think that’s what I did wrong last time so I came out of the uninstall option because I wanted to make sure I could find the same version but I can’t see it anywhere on my Synology downloads. Do you know why that would be? I’m just wondering if I go through with the uninstall if it then brings up another screen that would have files to install from?

@Josey45

You need to download the latest .spk package for your NAS from the Plex Downloads page and then install it manually in Package Center.

There is no time limit after uninstalling Plex from your NAS, just make sure you use the first option (keep all data) when you uninstall.

When you reinstall Plex, make sure you use the Plex Token option during the install.

Hi Trumpy81

Thanks for the reply you guys are great helping out an old timer it’s much appreciated it really is.

You are most welcome kind sir.

If you have any other questions just holler!, someone will help you for sure.

My preferences.xml file does not have the first string, ‘PlexOnlineHome’ because I don’t have managed users. The other 3 are there, but the value for ‘PlexOnlineToken’ is empty.

I tried removing the other three, did not work.

When I send the curl command, I keep getting the response ‘Unauthorised’.

I am on the same network, use the correct IP, I tried sending the curl command with a fresh claim token at least 30 times, through Putty, WinSCP & CMD, every time ‘Unauthorised’.

I have stopped and restarted the server so many times, rebooted my Qnap nas at least 5 times, rebooted my router, tried 10+ different ways to modify preferences.xml, tried different browsers and private sessions to access http://serverip:32400/web/ , looked for a claim button 100 times, this is just ridiculous.

Please Plex, bring out an update with a big fat ‘Claim server’ button for everyone, or something along those lines.

You will find the Claim server button in Plex Settings > Server > General.

In the meantime you may delete Preferences.xml (or move it out of the PlexMediaServer folder) while Plex is stopped.

When you restart Plex it should create a new Preferences.xml file for you, after you have signed in etc.

If you added any customisations to Preferences.xml, make sure you stop Plex again, add them back in and restart Plex.

Things should be back to normal, fingers crossed.

Hi trumpy81

Just want to double check with you so I don’t need to download the exact same version of Plex that I uninstalled is that right? As long as it’s the latest version it will still allow me to reclaim the token.

Below is a screenshot of the Plex Media Server I uninstalled then below that is the screenshot of the version it’s giving me to install below that again is the current DSM version I have.

Sorry for the bother I just don’t want to mess it up

Yes, make sure you download the latest package for Synology DSM 7.2.2+. It does not need to be the same version that you have now.

The latest version will fix some minor issues in the process.

Quality thanks Trumpy81

You are welcome.

Just remember, always get the latest update from the Plex Downloads page and install it manually.

Thanks Trumpy81 that’s me all sorted again. You guys are class can’t thank you enough. Quality

Again, you are welcome kind sir.

Happy Plexing!

When I stop the server, delete preferences.xml and restart, it wants me to start a new server: I have no option to login, only to give my server a friendly name and select media folders.

I don’t think I’m supposed to continue with that?

(Also, no new preferences file is created.) Correction, it did create a new preferences file, I had to refresh to see it, just going up a level and back down did not show it.

Oops, I forgot about the machine identifiers in Preferences.xml.

Hopefully you moved it and did not delete it?

If you moved it, move it back again and restart Plex.

If not, then you will need to set up your server again.

My apologies if that is the case.

Omg, I restarted the server once more, and now I got a claim server button!

It is still a bit wonky though, after another restart after claiming it, I now have both the claimed and the unclaimed server:

(Qwin is a test server I just installed on my desktop, just to see if that maybe jogged something)

Phew, that’s a relief … lol

To remove the unclaimed server, go to Plex Settings > Authorised Devices > Server and delete all but the latest entry there.

Restart Plex and the unclaimed server should be gone.

Only claimed devices will appear there.
