Unable to access server after password reset

This worked for me, THANK YOU CHUCK PA!

The http variant worked for me. Since we do not stream (low expensive rural bandwidth) I had to unpin several items and more or less restore a useful home page.

Looks like a combination of this and resetting my Preferences.xml file did the trick (running Plex via Docker on a Fedora Linux host). Steps I followed:

  1. Change password
  2. (since I was away from the server) Create SSH tunnel to the server: ssh -p 22 user@serverip -L 32400:127.0.0.1:32400
  3. Stop the Plex container
  4. cd into the folder with the Preferences.xml file (for my setup, it was at /data/plex/config/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Preferences.xml, but this will vary based on where you’ve set your Docker to install Plex)
  5. Open Preferences.xml with a text editor and remove the value and key for: PlexOnlineHome, PlexOnlineMail, PlexOnlineToken, and PlexOnlineUsername
  6. Generate new claim token at https://plex.tv/claim
  7. Replace the claim token in my Docker container with the new one
  8. Start the Plex container
  9. Access the server by going to http://localhost:32400/web in a web browser
  10. In my case, after I logged in to the server in step 9, everything was already reconnected and my libraries were showing up.

This is a HUGE fail from the Plex team. They ask thousands of people to reset their passwords because of a security breach and don’t warn anyone that it might break the access to their server :-1: Where is the staff helping people here ? I don’t see much.

For the record, my case:

  • Running linuxserver.io plex container in Unraid
  • Reset my password, left the checkbox checked to logout from all devices
  • Went back to my server (on my LAN, not app.plex.tv) and login with my new password
  • Web app opens, spinner spins… then shows nothing but an page that’ says I don’t have access
  • Refresh the home page, same thing
  • Left sidebar shows my libraries with a yellow exclamation mark
  • Click on settings, my server appears on the left, trying to connect, then disappears
  • No option anywhere to reclaim my server

The page that I was referred to in the interface did not help, it made me remove 4 key-values from Preferences.xml, but nothing changed after a restart.

What worked for me was this method found on reddit and already linked by someone here earlier

This was all I needed to recover from the password reset. Thank you!

I’m running Plex in a container on TrueNAS Scale. For that system, you need to edit the container, then paste the claim token here.

had the same. You probably deleted a space between values in preferences.xml

Same issue here. I have two Synology NAS devices. One of them, I was presented with the claim option; the other NAS never gave me the option to claim it. Tried most of the steps I found online - no luck.
As a last resort, I got it to work by uninstalling the PMS on the NAS. Got the claim token for the account. I then reinstalled the PMS using the “claim server option”. It was the middle of the three options available. This finally got everything up and running.

Reminding folks of Reclaim procedure on DSM 7+

DSM 7.2

Took only 2min and worked for me.

Thanks!

I fixed it by claimpms.sh script. Preference.xml/re-install PMS can’t help me……

Just reinstall the plex media program on your device then reboot. Problem solved!

Holy wow what a mess you made Plex developers! I get your database was compromised and now some of our personal data is on the dark web (thanks by the way!) but you really should have warned your users in the lovely email you sent hundreds of thousands of customers that reclaiming our plex account was necessary after resetting our passwords to prevent wide panic. Let’s plan better next time okay!?

Same here on windows 11 reset password as advised by Plex because of the breach and now I cannot claim a server. I have followed all the advice above and still nothing.

Honestly, I’m so mad today, I lost again 2 hours of my life trying to get back my serverS (yes I have several instances for different tests & purposes). Luckilly, my backup strategy is flawless… I could restore settings until I got access back

As Plex doesn’t seems to take security quite serioulsy (remember 2022), one question remains: do you want to keep this cloud based login system (knowing they probably use some personal data) or not?

  • Yes (knowing they will be hacked again)
  • No, I want my control back

Sorry for all people doing an hard work, but this question is LEGITIMATE!

PS: Lost all my familiy shared accesses, wonderful :expressionless_face:

So yes. Thank you Plex, did a good job. Joking.

No access to own media through your service (luckily accessible from different way).

No server can be claimed back (Asustor (ADM4.x) doesn’t have ‘curl’, can’t install/get either, no issues, there is another way. It just doesn’t work. Okay, try the 3rd one. Not working “We failed to authenticate towards plex.tv”..

Hm, fck, I don’t care, then I start from the beginning, deleting all devices from the list with the hope I have all the media files, I can recreate all.

Oh, I can’t, Server not authorized.

So, can’t get back, can’t erase at all to start over. No what?

@supaeasy Thank you for the link, this has also worked for me.
@BigWheel and other Plex employees. You need to update your support articles to include these steps! Your current solution does not work. It is not acceptable for a paid service to cause this much trouble for users.

Yes it works for me (Package Plex on Nas Synology DSM 7)

  1. i follow the steps here : https://support.plex.tv/articles/204281528-why-am-i-locked-out-of-server-settings-and-how-do-i-get-in/

@ChuckPa

Hi ChuckPa

A few years back I had an issue with reclaiming my server and you brilliantly helped me and it’s been fine up until today when I got an email saying I had to change my password because of a security breach at Plex. I changed my password and now again my Synology server is lost. I know that I have to reclaim it but I’m unsure how you did it last time.

Would be great if you could help me again ChuckPa.

Thanks Josey45

Thank you so much. This worked for me.

this works for me only in one of my two NAS servers. When I do it in one, the other dissappears automatically.
