Unable to add folders on NAS for Plex to scan

Synology D213j
DSM 6.2.4-25556 Update 5
PMS 1.24.4.5081-6000
macOS 12.2.1

Hi,

I’ve had PMS on my Synology for years. I use my NAS mostly for playing music through Sonos, but occasionally use PMS to stream video. A copy of my iTunes library lives on the Synology and I used PMS to stream contents of the Movies and TV Shows folders from inside that iTunes library. It just worked - for years, to the point where I would regularly forget how to operate DSM and PSM because I had no reason to check it.

Months ago, PMS just stopped seeing my folders. Nothing has changed in terms of organisation of the folders, their paths on the drive. I am not able to point the PMS to see my folders. I wish I could upload screenshots here, but here is my description of what’s going on:

My drive on Synology has 4 folders:

  • music
  • photos
  • video
  • Plex

Everything I care about is in the music folder (in music/itunes_nas/Music/) - this is where my iTunes library lives). photos and video folders are empty. Plex folder contains some Application Support files and I have never used it for anything. On DSM, the drive, where these folders live is called /volume1.

I can access all these files and folders from Finder. I can use music in my iTunes library stored on Synology with no issues. But no joy with Plex.

  • When I open Plex, it’s now empty; I go to Manage Libraries and click Add Library.
  • I select Films then Browse for Media Folders at which point I am shown what looks like a folder structure on the Synology drive where my iTunes library copy resides. But I only see the top-level structure, just /volume1 and /config.
  • First thing I tried is to manually input the correct path in the top field in that window, to /volume1/music/itunes_nas/Movies. But when I click Add, nothing happens.
  • When instead I click into /volume1, I am shown folders on my Synology drive, but when I click to enter them, they appear empty.
  • I also cannot remove anything from these “Manage Library” views.

Any hint as to how I can jolt Plex to see and scan my folders, which it used to do without any issue, for years, please let me know…

If Plex thinks they are empty –

  1. Control Panel - Shared Folders
  2. EDIT the shared folder containing the media
  3. Permissions tab.
  4. Verify user Plex is on that list.

Wow, and just like that, it works! There was no permission for user flex to access these folders. And it now syncs, after I enabled it.

Thanks a lot!
