Unable to cast to DNLA devices on network

Server Version#: 1.14.1.5488
Player Version#:

Hi Guys,

I have Plex server installed on a Synology DS 218+ and have just activated plex pass subscription. Have problems selecting renders on the network to stream to. When logged into the web app or mobile app when I attempt to select a player, it seems the only players that are found/available on the network are the ones with a plex app installed. i.e. My TV (Plex for Samsung) and Chrome (Plex Web). Its seems Plex app does not see the other DNLA devices on the network (i.e. DNLA speakers, kodi etc, or other smart TVs that don’t have plex apps installed). I have DNLA server enabled in Plex server. Other Synology and Third party DNLA apps have no issues finding or streaming to all the DNLA devices.

Any idea’s? Does plex DNLA only cast to other devices with plex apps installed?

Correct. Plex is not a DLNA client and therefore cannot communicate with other DLNA clients. Plex’s cast feature is a proprietary feature with other Plex clients. The exceptions are Google Cast and Apple Airplay available from some clients.

HI there, thanks for responding. I’m a little confused, in plex server settings it has check box to enable DLNA server, also, a while back Plex announced DLNA support which made me plumb for a plex pass from the get go… But from what you tell me here this does not appear to be the case, its not true DNLA support as renders are limited to only devices running some form plex. i.e. No way to send music to DNLA WiFi network speakers? Thats a shame, makes a plex subscription far less useful that I thought it would be. Synology apps allow me to send media to any and all DNLA devices.

To be clear, that setting is to enable your Plex Media Server to be accessible by other DLNA clients. Plex clients themselves are not DLNA clients and do not access your server through DLNA and therefore cannot “cast” to other DLNA clients. Only DLNA clients can talk to each other through a DLNA server.
