PMS was running fine on my Ubuntu Linux desktop PC. I was able to play content on my Mac Mini, connected to my TV.
Last weekend I upgraded my wireless access point and switched my desktop’s static IP from 192.168.X.Y to 10.0.0.101. When trying to connect from my Mac Mini, it told me that I needed to claim the server. I’ve clicked this “CLAIM SERVER” button a dozen of times but after 30 or so seconds of spinning, it returns to its “CLAIM SERVER” status.
I’ve tried a number of things (reboot the PC, restart the service, sign out/in from my Plex account) but nothing seems to help. From the PMS log files I can see some errors but it’s impossible for me to find out the real issue.
I managed to resolve my issue myself .
Root cause of the issue was my network setup. Previously it looked like this:
(public IP) Internet modem (192.168.1.1) - (192.168.1.2) Netgear access point with DHCP (10.0.0.1) - Linksys access point in “bridge mode” - (10.0.0.101 fixed IP) my Plex Media server.
Even though I didn’t enable “Remote Access”, I was unable to claim my server. With the above setup I had full network access from all devices, even to Plex’s web interface on port 32400.
I then decided to reconfigure all devices to be in the 192.168 range and that fixed my issue. I was able to claim my server again.
This is my current setup:
(public IP) Internet modem (192.168.1.1) - (192.168.1.2) Netgear access point with DHCP (192.168.2.1) - Linksys access point in “bridge mode” - (192.168.2.100 fixed IP) my Plex Media server.
I changed my router a week ago and i’m having trouble to claim my server since then. I try reinstall plex server on my NAS but still having issues to claim. I think is a bad router config. Here is my log when try to claim:
Could you please explain in more detail what exactly you changed? Did you replace your existing router by a new one? Or did you introduce an additional router in your home network? Try to visualize your setup, starting from your internet provider’s modem, and including your router(s), NAS,…
I’ve changed my internet provider so I have a new router. I’m not a expert with router setup. My IP is 192.168.1.1 but i don’t know how to see netgear or linksys access point. My NAS use static IP 192.168.1.92 and DHCP is enabled. Also port 32400 TCP/UDP is open in my router. Thank you for your reply and I don’t if this information helps.
Testing a little bit I found something that maybe helps.
I’ve also installed Plex server on my PC and I’ve noticed some differences between this server and the server on my NAS.
When I connect on my PC server it open Chrome page 127.0.0.1:32400 and in the access remote shows my PC IP in private connection and also shows that I have the latest version of the server. I have no trouble trying to connect and claim the PC server.
The difference is when I connect to my NAS server it open 192.168.1.34:32400 which is my NAS IP instead of 127.0.0.1:32400. In access remote says Unknown IP in private access and also says that a new server version is avaliable. I’m using the same version on both v1.19.4.2935
I hope this helps a little to find the issue. Thank you
The fact that you could successfully claim the Plex server on your PC, seems to confirm that your network setup seems fine at first sight.
I’m not sure, but I think you can only claim 1 server for a given Plex account. So, you’ll need to “forget” your PC if you want to try claiming your NAS again.
To access Plex’s web interface from your PC on the NAS, you indeed need to enter the NAS’s IP address + port in your browser’s navigation bar, in your case 192.168.1.34:32400. That page should open without any problem, then you know that routing is working fine.
Do you have access to a command line on your NAS server? You could use that to troubleshoot the issue with claiming the server.
I can access from PC and mobile to Plex web without any problem with IP and port of my NAS. Also I can access via NAS interface with same results. I forget PC server cause only was for testing. The only trouble is claim the server.
It’s strange that Plex server settings don’t show my private IP. Maybe problem is there.
I can access to all settings of my NAS but i don’t know what you mean by command line. I’m sorry
I’m actually struggling myself with my network setup. I managed to claim my server, but today I tried to play content from my server on my Windows laptop. It failed with the dreadful “No soup for you!” error message. My media libraries didn’t show at all.
So I decided to start troubleshooting my network setup again. I decided to connect my PMS directly to my Netgear router, completely bypassing my Linksys router (bridge mode). Guess what: suddenly my media libraries showed up on my Windows laptop and I could play content .
I will now focus on the settings of that Linksys router. There must be some setting there which makes PMS angry.
If I may share some insights on claiming and networking?
Both machines must be on the same IP subnet -OR- ssh tunneled together (to loopback of the server machine) to claim. When on a different subnet, the machine is considered “WAN” (remote) and PMS default security kicks in. It’s designed to prevent someone from getting control of your server in the event it’s not “claimed”.
UDP traffic does not cross subnet boundaries. (Player & Server SSDP discovery)
My PMS has IP address 192.168.2.100 (fixed) and is connected to the Linksys router (bridge mode).
My client receives its IP address in the range 192.168.2.2 - 49 from my Netgear router (DHCP).
From my client’s browser I can connect to 192.168.2.100:32400, this means that the routing seems ok.
I’m now suspecting that my server and client are on a different subnet because they are connected to different routers. But how can I verify this? I probably need to dive into the Linksys’s configuration to find a solution.
My issue, not being able to connect to my PMS from any client on my own network, seems to be resolved magically. The annoying thing is I don’t know or understand why.
I didn’t change anything on my routers, but did probably a reboot of my PMS. Did that help maybe?
The image you posted is exactly the same I see when I try to connect. I can see and connect to server in my PC and mobile so Network shoud be fine. I reboot PSM, reinstall PSM, reboot my NAS, reboot my router, delete PSM from my account… Nothing works and still having the same issue. When trying to claim shows me and error of Plex was unable to connect with my account (but I’m on my account) and that’s it.
My only option at this point is change to another Media server. I install Emby on my NAS and all works fine from 1st minute. Thank you for your support and bye Plex
