Unable to connect securely (from app.plex.tv)

Server Version#: 1.25.2.5319
Player Version#: app.plex.tv

I recently had to restore my plex setup from a backup onto a new version of windows. (Had gotten hacked).

Ever since then I’ve been getting this error. I -did- rename the server but that shouldn’t be an issue.

I’ve reviewed the info at How to Use Secure Server Connections | Plex Support and feel all my settings are correct.

From other topics I’ve read re this issue, it looks like my “master” plex.tv certificates may be messed up.

Can you reset/remove them all for my most recent server? I can supply logs if needed.

Thanks!

You need remote access working. Is this working via ‘Settings - Remote Access’ or ‘Custom server access URLs’?

If so try logging the server out under ‘Settings - General - Sign Out button’ then reclaim the server.

Remote access tab shows “Fully accessible outside your network”. I’ll try the sign-out/in.

Sign out, then reclaim made no difference.

Hmm, weird. I dunno maybe you do need the cert reset. I would think it would be re-issued when logging back in.

I still need help. Nothing I try from my side changes anything.

Settings - Server - Network
what is selected for “Secure Connections”?

Currently: preferred. Per some of the other topics, I also tried setting it to required, saved, set it to preferred, saved. No difference.

How often and how fast did you make these tests?
Your account is currently under a “cert renewal embargo” because of incredibly fast repeating certificate requests.

Huh. Well… I may have tried a lot of times and fairly often. I’ve also disconnected/re-connected my server from my account. I was really trying hard to get it working

Shut down your server for a moment, please.
Wait 10 minutes, then restart it.

It’s down. Will restart in 10.

What’s the best practice in the future should a mis-match occur? I have only had to restore/rename one other time in the last few years.

I gave it 15 and restarted. Bringing up a web page with app.plex.tv still gives “app.plex.tv is unable to connect to xxxxxxx securely”.

Are you able to access your Plex server from your phone with WiFi turned off?

Is it possible that you restored the files while being logged on as a different Windows user? (“Administrator”, perhaps?)
It appears as if some of the files inside your Plex data folder are not writable by your currently running server.

@kegbeach I can access plex from phone w/o wifi from app, but not web.

@ottokerner, it is -entirely- possible that my permissions are messed up. I can try running plex as admin or reset perms on the server files. Suggestions?

Don’t. Ever. It will cause the very same issue.

Yes, try that. While the server tray icon is closed, of course. Do also stop the “Plex Updater Service”.

Btw.

Not “Plex server files”. Which could also mean the executables.
But I am referring to the files inside the Plex data folder exclusively.

Ack on data files only AND shutting down server and service. What -should- the permissions be? (nice utility, BTW)

Once I reset perms, anything else needed before trying a restart

What all other files in your Windows user’s AppData folder are. i.e. simply tell it to activate inheritance from upper level and take ownership as well.
If that doesn’t work with this utility, give each of these three user accounts “full access”:

  • Administrator
  • SYSTEM
  • [your user name]

Working on resetting all the perms to match ‘appdata’.
