Unable to delete media

Server Version#: 1.18.4.2171
Player Version#: 1.6.5.1097
When trying to delete subtitles files, I get an error “There was a problem deleting this stream.”
I checked the Media Deletion option in the Library panel (it’s on) and file permissions are fine too (PMS isn’t running as a service). Console only shows this :

Auth: authenticated user 1 as [redacted]
Request: [192.168.1.46:50613 (Subnet)] Delete /library/streams/85862 (12 live) TLS GZIP Signed-in Token ([redacted])
Completed: [192.168.1.46:50613] 403 Delete /library/streams/85862 (12 live) TLS GZIP 14 ms 458 bytes (pipelined: 2)

The return code 403 means the request/action was forbidden.
Can you confirm the user under which you run Plex as a service can write to that media folder?

I’m not running Plex as a service. As for the media folder (I’m assuming you’re refering to %localAppData%\Plex Media Server\Media) the user Plex is running as has complete rights over it.

Plex downloads all my subs to that folder (well sub-sub-sub folders) so I know it has effective write access to it.

What kind of subtitles are we talking about?
Do you use some plugin like SubZero or are those files you have manually added to your file-system (as local media assets).

I’m talking about subs downloaded automatically by PMS.

Isn’t that feature only available in a Plex Pass preview?

At least your forum account seems to have no Plex Pass associated to it… could it be you downloaded those while you had an active Plex Pass and Plex expects the Plex Pass for all subsequent management activities of the downloaded subs (incl. deleting them)?

It’s a base feature, you just need to enable the appropriate agents. At least that’s how I did it.
I’ve been using that feature for years (I’ve never had a Plex Pass as I have no need for its features) but in a very few cases the downloaded subs aren’t the right ones so it’s a bit tedious to navigate the appdata folder…

The common answer with regards to subtitles downloaded with the OpenSubtitles agent/source is to manually delete the files in the plex data folder… there’s quite a number of posts on this dating back to 2015…

@tom80H: Thanks, but his is a very cryptic answer.

I now spend about two hours on this forum to read through a lot of the questions about deleting the subtitles, but found not one workable answer. But ofcourse I am not so common to this forum as a Moderator.

I looked in the data folder and what now, for a common user there is no way to relate those to an actual movie/episode?

Since you mention the question is asked so many times. The problem is so common I assume some Plex enthousiast made some kind of faq entry for it I should be able to find?

Can you put me in a direction?

Speaking of cryptic
What exactly are you trying to delete? Are you also using some subtitle agent or the native Plex “on demand subtitles” feature?

Exactly the same as the original poster, I enabled the opensubtitle agent and already use this for years. I also have admin rights and get exactly the same messages.

My scenario was that I had manually added subtitle files via drag and drop in Plex Server. After deleting the subtitle files from my NAS I was then unable to delete the reference to them in Plex Server.

The relatively quick workaround I found to remove the subtitles reference was to:

  1. Move the video file out of your library folder (for me this was on my NAS)
  2. Scan your library
  3. Empty the library trash to remove the media from Plex Server
  4. Move the video file back to your library folder
  5. Rescan the library to add the media back to your Plex Server

The subtitles are no longer listed in the drop down in Plex Server. A bit of a convoluted method but the first one I found to work after 10 mins Googling.
