I’ve been investigating this again after seeing some of the messages left late and it’s true that long lists load in that version. Between 7.10 and 7.11, we had to update some of the google libraries required for Android Auto integration, and apparently that’s when the problems with long lists started. Checking information provided by internal builds, I see how the piece of code displaying the content passed is failing to load long lists, saying that it’s they’re too big. As I’ve said before, I’m sure our code is passing the full list correctly, but the issue is in the Android Auto side (concretely, in the libraries used for its integration).
Does anyone else also notice this issue with Plex not starting on Android Auto? I plug the phone in and go to media and the screen says “Plex doesn’t seem to be working right now”. Only way I can get it to work is to unplug the phone and then manually start Plex them plug back in to the car and then it works.
@jesusmc, is there anything end users can do to let Google know about this, or have you and other developers notified Android Auto developers about this issue with updated libraries?
@jesusmc , have you guys reached out to Google to make them aware of this issue it is there some Google forum you are aware of that we can track?
Any further updates on this? Looks like it’s still happening after the latest update.
I’d pretty much given up on using Plex with Android Auto since nothing but Playlists ever resolves. Then I found this thread. Could this be a ray of sunshine in my otherwise gloomy Plex with Android Auto experience?
So how do I go about installing the version listed above? Could someone supply instructions? I’ve only installed apps through the Google Play Store and can’t figure out how to install an older version.
Go to Google play store=>settings=>Auto update apps=>don’t Auto update apps.
Then uninstall Plex app from your device.
Go to https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/plex-inc/plex/plex-7-10-0-8875-release/
And select the APK version that matches your device architecture, download it and install it. Once you download the file, follow the prompts.
THANK YOU!
Sorry for the delayed response, but it took me a few tries to get the 7-10-0-8875 APK to successfully download and install. Plex now seems to be working on Android Auto as it briefly did when I first started using it. The Recently Played, Recently Added, and Artists lists now resolve and are available. Yay, I got my music back!
My hope now is that the developers at Plex will compare the 7-10-0-8875 version with the current version(s) to see what caused the later versions to effectively stop working.
if you read above
the issue is on Android Auto side that no longer accepts long lists.
Curious that AA requires updating libraries to integrate apps that eventually work (better) even without the update …
Perhaps you are dealing with a different issue than I was encountering.
My issue was that only Playlists would show up on my Android Auto when using Plex. If I opened either Recently Played, Recently Added, or Artists, I would get the spinning circle that never resolved, even after waiting over a half an hour.
During my troubleshooting back in March, I deleted and re-downloaded both the Plex and Android Auto apps on my Samsung S8 so both would be the most current versions. Neither update resolved my issue. By following the instructions posted by gconcepts above, I was able to revert the Plex app on my phone back to version 7-10-0-8875. I now have access to my entire collection on Android Auto, including Recently Played, Recently Added, and Artists. So clearly Plex, not Android Auto, was the cause of my issue.
Regarding the topic of this post, either Plex’s or Android Auto’s inability to display long lists… Since reverting back to Plex version 7-10-0-8875, I can now access my entire collection, which consists of:
451 Artists
877 Albums
11,178 Tracks
I don’t tend to use playlists much because I prefer to use Genre filters or Mood Mixes (wish those were available on the Android Auto interface), but 2 of my 3 playlists are over 100 tracks… I doubt that brings my situation within the scope of this topic.
I do hope that a resolution is found for the issue you are struggling with. I’m just very happy that I now effectively have a 877 disc CD changer in my car. I still hope that a resolution is found so that I can run from an updated version of Plex. For now, I’ll stick with the old one.

I’ve been investigating this again after seeing some of the messages left late and it’s true that long lists load in that version. Between 7.10 and 7.11, we had to update some of the google libraries required for Android Auto integration, and apparently that’s when the problems with long lists started. So it’s Plex that blames AA not me.
The reality is that on AA runs an old version of Plex that does not have libraries updated as required by the AA protocol.
And on this I await answers.
@elan @jesusmc can we have the link to where this is being reported to Google so we can follow up with Google on this issue? This essentially makes the Android Auto integration useless at this point.
In the meantime the issue summarized in this video has been solved
… when you return to AA the paused song disappears directly
great

This resolved the issue for me also. Thanks!!! Hopefully with the new Android Auto release slated for “summer” they will resolve some of these issues. Fingers crossed!
Experiencing the same issue here.
Plex version: 7.16.0.10.517
Still having this issue. It makes Android auto impossible to use on screen with Plex. Putting music on has to be done via the phone now. Also it seem that after every call, and text, Plex has stopped resuming playback, it’s stuck in a paused state. Annoying at best.
Just to add further to this topic. I’ve had the same issue with a large playlist not working or displaying through the Android Auto app for most of this year. I can confirm that it worked fine before this time and also can confirm that the large playlists works fine in the Plex app in isolation. Thanks to the great feedback from others, I’ve rolled back my Plex app version to v7.10.0.8875 and now it works perfectly. So, I’m trying to understand why it would be an AA issue if it works perfectly using the older Plex version and the current AA? Wouldn’t it be logical to assume the issue somehow lies with something Plex has changed? Either way, it relates to the integration between the 2 apps so it appears that the 2 organisations will have to collaborate to fix it and not point the finger at each other. It’s a real pity that this issue has lasted for so long considering (for me) it’s a real safety issue trying negotiate workarounds.
