Unable to play videos from tivo box

Unable to play videos from Plex using tivo. Unsure of when this began as I rarely try to play via the app built into tivo and normally use chromecast or the web app via a pc. I know it did previously work. I also had my friend test off my network he was able to stream via his pc but unable to stream via his tivo box running the same software versions. I get 3 dots upon selecting a video then it eventually goes to an error “There was a problem playing this item. The video did not start playing in time.”

I did see there was a similar issue reported 5 days ago but since remote streaming was working for them I did not comment on that issue since that is not working in this case. I’ve tried this with and without hardware transcoding enabled and also tried different things with different encodings. I am able to stream music still both in and out of home using this app still via tivo.

How long ago was the last time you used the Tivo. Was it before September of last year? If so, likely due to this Plex support is ending 2020-09-30 on older smart TV devices.

That’s entirely possible I don’t remember for sure the exact last time. It is the older app layout if that would make it more clear if that would be impacted. I did see that happened but I figured that would also stop music streaming.

I also found on the main plex site my boxes should be supported they are series 5 and series 6

Sorry, you’re reading that wrong. Those are listed under the section “No Longer Supported TVs”. It might be confusing since it says TV, but everything under that section are the devices that are no longer supported but the app is still available, but not guaranteed to work.

Only the device listed above that section are supported now.

We’ve investigate this issue further and determined the issue is related to the certificate generated by some Plex Media Servers for a limited period of time. This issue will self correct itself two months after the original certificate creation when it’s automatically renewed, but you can manually delete the existing certificate to force it to regenerate immediately.

To manually regenerate the certificate please follow these steps:

  1. Browse to the Plex Media Server data directory on your server
  2. Open the Cache folder
  3. Delete cert-v2.p12
  4. Restart Plex Media Server
