"Unable to tune channel (No parts)" and failed DVR recordings

No I meant to shut down Plex and copy the DB yourself, then restart Plex.

Use the schedule and set things for 1 day to reproduce via Plex.

Ok, thought that might be what you were saying. Is there some kind of 1 day setting that I’m missing for the database backup? The only thing I see is the 3 day setting. Where’s the 1 day setting?

There isn’t one. It’s 3 Days or nothing. How much changes on your system in 3 days?

It doesn’t change that much. I don’t need the actual backup right now. I’m just trying to test a theory with the backup command. I think the backup is causing the ā€œtune channel (no parts)ā€ error. I tested last night using the web app to view Live TV and I wasn’t able to reproduce the error. Next test will be on Thursday and I’ll use the Xbox One to view Live TV this time. Maybe the error is more prevalent when using the Xbox one although other users are reporting the same issue when viewing Live TV in other apps.

@johnm_ColaSC Well, I got the error again this morning. No idea why, but here are the logs. I got the error at about 6:30 this morning (3/13). Can you find anything in the logs that might have occurred between yesterday morning at 5 AM and today? There were no recordings on the NBC channel that had the error. Why is this happening?

Is anyone else still getting this error?

Even after I restarted I got an error message, and it was on every channel. This time though it just said ā€œunable to tune channelā€. ā€œno partsā€ wasn’t included in the error message. More logs attached.

I see similar issues in the logs where a Live TV session is active since 3/12 @ 05:51:

I have filed an incident with a Plex Dev the other week when I had a similar situation. Was doing testing on multiple devices at the same time, Shield TV, Roku TV, PMP, and Plex Web. After testing apparently 2 of the devices must not have released the tuner. Hopefully these are related and the Dev will find a cause.

@johnm_ColaSC Awesome, thanks! Glad you found something in the logs. Really strange that it holds on to that tuner, but it doesn’t show up as active in the Plex system settings. Strange too that it sometimes releases the tuner and other times it doesn’t. Hope the devs can find a fix.

I think that the ā€œLive TVā€ not releasing the session is a good lead. For reference, since upgrading to 1.12.0.4829, I have not used Live TV at all, and the DVR hasn’t missed a recording.

@kinoCharlino I read your recent post about Grid guide, and look forward to the new feature. Before rolling out grid guide though can you please review this post and make sure to fix the issue with tuners not getting released? LiveTV can’t be used at all, grid guide or not, if we have to constantly restart the server.

@Moussa Can you also add this to the known issues list for Xbox One? We can’t use LiveTV on Xbox One because it keeps locking the tuner which causes failed recordings.

@johnm_ColaSC Now that grid guide is released I’m eager to check out Live TV again. Hesitant though because of this bug. Any idea if the ā€œtune channel no partsā€ bug has been fixed?

I haven’t had a problem recently, but I don’t know if the problem is actually fixed. I updated hdhr firmware to the March 2018 version and an running the current PlexPass server.

@mbarylski I am not sure if it has been or not. I did have a tuner still in use the other day. Unplugged the tuner for a minute and plugged it back in seemed to fix it. Plex noticed when the tuner went offline and when it saw the tuner again there was no active recording on it. I believe this happens when you are watching Live TV and don’t exit the Live TV session before switching from Plex to another app such as Netflix. I think Plex is left running in the background and keeps the tuner active.

@imagoodusername @johnm_ColaSC Ok, thanks. Looks like it’s still a bug then. Can Plex reproduce the issue when switching to a new app before exiting LiveTV? That issue doesn’t occur with the SD HomeRun app. It would be nice if they could fix it.

After not seeing the bug for a while, I just got the dreaded ā€œUnable to tune channel (No parts)ā€ message again…

Reboot fixes it but it’s annoying that there still isn’t a solution for this.

Wanted to post an update on this. I inquired about the issue with tuners not releasing and was told a fix is scheduled to be released in an upcoming PMS update.

Any idea when that update will be released?

Was released to beta on June 26. 1.13.3.5208

(Live) Tuners could remain in use indefinitely if clients disconnected without notice (#8019)

Bummer. Looks like it wasn’t fixed or there is another bug in play…
