Unable to Upgrade Library [Music]

Server Version#: 1.28.2.6151 (plexpass on truenas, in an iocage)
Player Version#: 4.87.2 (web)

I’ve been getting bugged for a couple of years about updating the metadata agent for my music library, and finally have some time to sit down with it. Sitting in the Setting → Manage → Libraries menu, the option to upgrade library has been around, and ineffective, for a long, long time.

Any pointers for where to dig in the log files? I’m not seeing anything jump out at me.
I’ve browsed some of the support articles and haven’t been able to turn up anything in particular about this issue. Maybe it’s an issue of google-fu, but I’m finding more folks claiming they can’t get their libraries to scan for newly added files, rather than stumbling over a metadata update.

My Artists agent options are more limited than I’m expecting - just Personal Media Artists and Local Media Assets - no sign of the Plex Music option I’m expecting.
Manually toggling the Library → Edit → Advanced agent option to Plex Music isn’t sticking, either.

Any thoughts?

What I do is power cycle my server, make a coffee, and download PMS logs.
The two files to examine in that case are

  1. Plex Media Server.log
  2. com.plexapp.system.log

In particular I’m looking in the first one for ERROR messages or ones that contain SQLITE especially if they talk about corruption. The second file is much less rarely important for debugging, but has ERROR message and CRITICAL messages.

If your logs look reasonable, then we can try to get you the upgrade to the Plex Music Agent. If you follow the article below exactly and it doesn’t work, screenshot & describe the issue:

You asked a question about just switching the drop down in Edit → Advanced. That would only affect newly added items afaik.
