Unable to use closed captions

My server is an Asustor AS3304T. I’ve tried all my clients: Google Pixel 7a, Samsung Galaxy Tab S6, Insignia FireTV, Google Chromecast with Google TV 4k, Linux, Windows, Firefox and Chrome browsers on both Linux and Windows.

Every time I try to turn on Closed Captions for Live TV or for DVR, the playback stops. Sometimes the setting stays on so no channel works on that client until I restart it. It’s never worked. I’d be happy to provide logs, but I’m not sure how to capture, or how much would be useful.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Turns out I had turned off transcoding. This is really frustrating because the app should not just quit. It should say it can’t display closed captions without transcoding. And that, in itself is ridiculous, because all of the clients have enough horsepower to render captions themselves - the server should not have to do that.

Then it turns out my server is not fast enough to render them in real time, so it’s not actually useful. What an awful experience.
