Unable to use DRM'ed movies through PlexConnect

I am running the latest PlexConnect and latest AppleTV2 firmware. I get a message saying that I do not have authorization for playback, this was from our recently purchased "Oz" movie in 1080p. I was able to watch it by watching it on the AppleTV through the standard iTunes->AppleTV playback.

PlexConnect is supposed to work with iTunes purchased content, correct?

Yes that's correct, in fact most of my library is iTunes drm'd content and if it didn't work then I wouldn't be working on this project as it would be useless to me.

I've had 2 instances of the problem you describe, "not authorized for playback" and both times rebooting my atv has solved it. A few things to try:-

1. Reboot/unplug the atv.
2. Sign out of your account on the atv, reboot, then sign back in.
3. Failing that try a complete restore of the atv.

UPDATE:- So I haven't watched anything in quite a while so I just tried to watch a drm'd file and it seems to no longer works :( Could apple have changed something there end with the authorization servers to block this :( Well this sucks

What happens using a much older version on PlexConnect?

How do you determine if a file is DRM? I have season 5 of MadMen purchased from iTunes and downloaded to my hard drive. I have no problem playing these files in Plexconnect. Same with a couple of Downton Abbey Christmas specials.

Look for DRMS on the preplay screen:-

Still the same, no longer plays drm'd files

OK, so the Mad Men episodes show that and they play. I am using the latest commit.

Ok, so after rebooting my atv half a dozen time or so it's now working again for me...... Very strange.

Cool. Did you do the unplug, wait 10 seconds, magic reboot?

A combination of unplugs and restarts from the settings menu. As I said this has happen to me twice before and a single reboot has fixed it, not sure what's causing it or why it's fixed by a reboot.

Hmm I wonder if it is related to HDCP handshake issue.

No, because during the times that PlexConnect fails to play drm'd video home sharing and the native atv playback still works fine.

Here is how I fixed mine. I went into the purchased part on the ATV and started playing a movie. It then authorized it and they ALL started working again.

Edit.  You need to go to the icloud part of purchased on the ATV. play one of the movies and then play the ones in Plexconnect.

Thanks for this tip. I kept trying to play movies i had purchased through Home Sharing and that didn't fix it. But once i went to Movies->Purchased and played one of my purchased movies via iCloud, PlexConnect started playing my purchased movies.

That correct. i updated my quote. I should have said the icloud

I will add this to the wiki in the next couple if days aling with a number of other items.

I will attempt this and report back. Happy to have found a bug/fix that we can work on as a community. Thanks!

Just a bump and an FYI for everyone -

I have had to do this fix 3-ish times. It seems that when updating the iOS version and/or PlexConnect, I have to re-authorize for each ATV. I'm not sure if this is expected, but I wanted all the people out there to know that it does still work, you just have to keep doing it each update.
