Undefined error -2140536828 on PS4 after update to 1.3.3.3148

Yeasterday, I also update my plex serwer on Qnap using opkg to the newest version and after that I cannot open on PS4 any movie with subtitles.
I rollback my plex server to the previous version but problem still appears on PS4 only when try to watch movie with subtitles.

At first. This is what worked for me with my Synology with Plex Media Server.

I uninstalled Plex Media Server.
Then I started WINSCP/AndFTP with an SSH connection to my Synology.
I went to the following path (with Admin user because of permissions):
/Volume1/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/

I deleted all the files in Logs (not the folders).
Then I went to the Codecs folder and deleted all the codecs including folders. I did not delete the single file in the Codecs folder that was left.

After that I installed PlexMediaServer-1.7.6.4058-8fa494d15-x86_64.spk with a manual installation.
I tried to start an episode, but I got the same error.
There was an update available, so I installed the update.
After I installed the update, the episode started with subtitles on.

I am currently running 1.10.0.4523-648bc61d and everything is working fine.
These were my exact steps, but if you’re doing it differently it probably works too.

I have the exact same issue. Running the newest version of pms and plex app for ps4.
I hope they’re still trying to fix it…

… Same for me: On my Synology DS415+ (with DSM 6.1.6-15266), all movies with .srt subtitles are crashing on my PS4 (Plex version 1.12.2.4929) with error code -2140536828. I hope you guys will fix this problem asap. Good luck.

Here is a fix that worked for me:

  • Open the media app on the PS4
  • Put your cursor over the Plex app
  • Press ā€œoptionsā€ > ā€œclose applicationā€
  • Relaunch Plex and enjoy

Do you mean the standard ps4 media app? (Step 1)

I just updated the latest server version of plex and was able to watch mkv file with the sub on my ps4 pro. You guys can check it out.

It still happens with the last ps4 app version and last PMS version for QNAP ( 1.12.3.4973 )… I tried the commented steps without success… any suggestion?

Same files work smoothly on my samsung smart tv app, iOS app, web app… it only fails on ps4 app :disappointed:

Thanks

I had my server sitting in a box for a couple of weeks while I moved. I just set it up, installed the Plex update, and now I’m getting -2140536828 on my PS4. This is extremely disappointing.

Same issue (undefined error -2140536828). Latest PMS on Linux (official docker image, 1.13.0.5023) + latest PS4 client (3.13.13). No issues whatsoever on any other Plex client I tested (browser, Plex Media Player, Android app + chromecast). This error only happens for some videos, but I’m not sure what is different about them. Can someone from Plex support do something about it? It’s not unreasonable to expect fixing a bug that apparently is there for some time now, especially considering most of us pay for it.

This error means that the media can’t be played. Usually because of Transcoding issues. For instance, it would happen when the transcoder is not capable of including Subtitles, that’s probably why turning it off works as it falls back to playing original without transcoding.

On my side, I stumbled upon this error when I migrated my server and the permission of my Plex library were all messed up.

So restoring the permissions with chown -R plex:plex /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application\ Support/Plex\ Media\ Server/ resolved the problem for me.

If you read your logs tail -f Logs/Plex\ Media\ Server.log when the error happen, there is a good chance that the error and the reason for it shows up there. The lines of the Plex Transcoder starts with [transcoder].

Mine was saying that Plex Transcoder terminated unexpectedly, and on a previous line, Permission denied, so I fixed the permissions.

Hi Plex, any resolution to this? I’ve been enjoying your product, which I’ve paid for, for some time and now it’s rather a frustrating experience to be honest. I’m experiencing the subtitle crash on all my client devices (ps4, samsung tv app, etc.) - I can see, that people are reporting this for over a year now, so I’m wondering, if you’re planning to fix this or if I should just go somewhere else (I don’t expect you to refund me…).

I cannot believe Plex does not even update on the progress related to this issue , for more than a year.

You guys are underestimating the number of people impacted by this issue .

Wake up lads , this poor customer service is harming your business

Paul please , would you give us an update . Your last message is from March 6th.

Plex Team, please, solve this very old issues, we are more 1 year and 6 month later the first trouble…

For those who are having problems and dont receive any type of support from Plex: I ended uninstalling Plex server on my Ubuntu box, and then install Universal Media Server (UMS). The system streams super fast with subtitles at 1080p, the connection with the PS4 use the native media application (using DNLA) and I’m using a very low power CPU (Intel Celeron J1800). The value of my subscription was sent as donation to UMS.

Why hasn’t this been fixed yet?

My son is hearing impaired, he cannot watch a movie without subtitles, please, please get this fixed soon!

Sorry about the inconvenience guys. At the moment the PS4 runs our old V1 app, which there is no more active development on. We are currently trying to replace the V1 app with our new V2 app, on all platforms, which should automatically fix most of these issues. We have to do this one platform at a time because it is a huge process for each platform (liasing with the platform’s company to make sure they’re happy it conforms to their standards, fixing platform-specific bugs, etc.). Apologies for the delay but rest assured we are working tirelessly on it.

So I just now got the same error - in the middle of watching a mkv encoded video (subtitles turned of) the video started buffering and after I tried to restart I now get this undefined code error on my PS4 Plex app (PC works fine).
