Unmatch and completely remove existing META

Hey,

I’ve setup a Plex server for my kids, and manually selected what episodes my kids should watch.
Unfortunately it seems that Plex is “over-achieving”, forcing matches even when it shouldn’t, and “not forgetting” META when asked to Unmatch.

Let’s say that I have Show1, which has Series1 and Series2. From Series2 - that has 10 episodes - I’ve only added Ep1, Ep5, and Ep7. When matching, Plex is basically ignoring any kind of file naming, and considers Ep5 as Ep2, and Ep7 as Ep2. This generates totally wrong thumbnails, which is really annoying because my kids say “let’s watch the episode with the car” (because Ep2 has a car thumbnail) but there is no “car” in the episode (because, remember, we’re basically watching Ep5, not Ep2).

I’ve set Plex to Unmatch but - and here’s the basic issue - the titles remain or has a date format (year-month-day).

Example:

  • Filename is: duck_tales_s01_e01
  • Plex name, after “unmatching” is: 1987-09-18

I guess that, somehow, Plex is still keeping some META data for that folder? If I’ll rename the folder, Plex will just scan and re-match.

So:

1. How can I delete all data/meta for Unmatched shows
OR
2. How can I set an entire “TV Programmes” library to not match anything

Thank you!

Yes it does BUT you will NEVER get plex to admit that.

Item 1.
The Plex Dance ™

Item2.
You must create a library type “Other Video”

Any fix? Except moving to Emby…

Fix for what? It’s not broke as they say in the plexverse.
Let me dig it up…Ahh. Here → What does the unmatch command do

May I have some examples please?

Plex’s primary form of matching IS filenaming.
Second is the tagging (Metadata) stored in the file.

If either of these are ambiguous or incorrect, your results will not be what you expect

I’ve intentionally messed with naming in order for Plex to “forget”. But even so Plex is either showing initial naming (like before Unmatching) or showing year-month-date.

When you create a TV library in the set up process you can change the agent to Personal Media Shows in the advanced tab. This is basically the same as an “other videos” library and not grab online data but it will allow you to keep things in a Seasons and episodes format. (which allows for things Like On Deck and such to work.) It will need the proper naming with the S01E01

I don’t know what type of files you have but It will still grab embedded metadata in an MP4 file if you have local media assets turned on for personal media and if the file has a date or something in it’s metadata title field may be the reason it is doing that. it might be getting the episode numbers wrong because of some embedded metadata too. but i don’t want to make assumptions about your files. If they are MKVs it should not do that.

I would remove the file(s) completely out of the main folder it is looking at for library to do the “dance”

Why wouldn’t we admit that? That is what the Plex Dance is for, to remove that cache of data. There is also http caches in the servers plugin support folder. No one has ever asked so directly before at least not to me that i recall. The dance is just easier to explain than searching database or metadata bundles with long GUIDs as files names that won’t make any sense.

This did the trick, thank you!

Also here’s another thing that I’m looking to “fix”. I have folders with multiple video songs, like SuperSimpleSongs, TraLaLa etc. I want to keep the “folder” structure similar to TV Series, have thumbnails (directly from videos), be able to set “image covers” (so my kids will recognise them) BUT keep the file names. Right now if I use “TV Series” covers will be ok, but I’m forced to have a “sXeX” file-naming (which doesn’t makes any sense). If I use “Other Videos” I’ll keep the file naming, but I’ll loose Covers.

Here’s the structure when using “Other Videos”. Everything is OK, except the fact that I cannot set Covers.

Here’s the structure when using “TV Series”. I can set Covers, but 80% of the files are missing because they don’t have a sXeX naming.

So basically I’m looking for a way to set Covers for “Other Videos” or allow TV Series to show all files no mater their naming.

Any hints?

Change video name does not help but if you change the details for the video from the video properties this should help. Plex media server reads the video properties and change name on streamer. I had the same problem before and also the video cover is not match but after I change the details in the properties fixed the issue. For create cover there are some software create cover for the videos but it needs a lot of work.

Change from … what to … what? Can you please provide a little bit more details?

You will need to change the title, subtitle and other details. Normally when you rip DVD or get video from friend. The details in video is erased. You will need to add it back to the video.

Yes, I understand that, but you didn’t specified what should the NEW information contain. What should the new meta/description? An working example would be very useful. Thanks!

In the title you could use the name with season. In the subtitle Episode NO. In the year put the right year, Genre, and Directors name if available.

After you finish Refresh Metadata. If it did not work click on Fix Match and choose the right cover. image
I did not have any problem with this method always working fine. If it did not work there are other solutions like software to read and create cover automatically but either it is complicated or you have to purchase the software. I have friend place each season in a folder and add picture for the season and name it “Front” JPG but I never tried this method.

You can also add poster to Plex directly. image

This will upload image for the season or video.
