Unsecure Connections. Not sure what the issue may be

Server Version#: 1.22.1.4228
Player Version#: 4.53.0

Good morning!

I have a problem that I hope I can get some help with. I am unable to access plex on the web app unless is I access it unsecurely. In 2019 I moved my PMS from Linux to Windows. When I was on Linux, I was able to access it securely. I had that computer set up for around 2 years. Me being a simple person, wanted the simplicity of a windows build. So in 2019 I reformatted the computer and installed Windows along with PMS and was able to save the metadata so I didn’t lose any art, playlists, watched/unwatched media, etc.

That being said, I never got it to work on HTTPS and had to default to HTTP which has been a pain because I would like to remote view my media w/o security concerns. Basically, every time I open a new tab in a browser and go to plex web, I get greeted with the orange exclamation points next to my libraries and the ā€œapp.plex.tv is unable to connect to ā€˜Server Name’ securelyā€ message when I select a library.

I use a Verizon G3100 router and can supply logs if needed. I mention the router because I’m not sure if it is a router issue or something else. Thank you for your time and for any help you can lend.

Edit: I just want to add as pointed out below, when I set the server to Secure connections: Required, that’s when I get the error. When I set it to Preferred or Disabled, It works but under those 2 settings it defaults to an unsecure connection.

Settings - Server - Network - ā€œSecure connectionsā€ = Preferred

Thank you for the reply, Otto.

That’s the thing. If I set it to Secure connections Required, that’s when I get the error. When I set it to Preferred or Disabled, It works but under those 2 settings it defaults to an unsecure connection. I should have added this to the original post. Will edit if I can.

You need a server restart after changing it.

Secure connection might get disabled automatically, if the web app has sensed ā€œDNS rebinding protectionā€ being active on your network.
The only place where you can influence this is in your DNS resolver’s settings, which are usually to be found in your router ( – unless you are using an additional DNS-based filter, like ā€œPi-holeā€ etc.).

That did it! I will keep testing it for a bit but it is working after setting it on Required and restarting PMS. Thank you so much!

Errr, what exactly?

So I put it back on Secure connections : required. Restarted Plex Media server like you suggested earlier. Even the remote connection automatically fixed itself.

This won’t allow any client to fall back to unencrypted connections. Which might bite you next time when you lose internet connectivity. Or use an older client type.

That’s ok. I value security over convenience. Now I got the best of both worlds.
