Update the Version of Plex

I’m trying to upgrade my Plex account. I’m currently running version 1.7.2.3878. It says to update manually. When I click the link it only provides me with a .bin file. I cannot open this .bin on either my Mac or my Windows PC. Am I missing something?

Are you trying to get it from here?

Access this page from the PC or Mac actually running Plex Media Server to download and install direct.

Is your Plex server actually running on a NAS device?
If so, please state maker and model.

Yes, its running through my WD MyCloundPR2100.

I tried installing from this link and nothing started up once I selected Launch. I also ran it again and selected repair and still nothing started up. My plex account online still states it needs to update.

If your Plex Media Server is installed on the MyCloud, you’ll need to update it there. It’ll be no good to install the Mac/Windows version on your actual computer, nor can you actually install the binary for your MyCloud on that machine.

How do I update Plex Media Server versions?

Unlike a regular Plex Media Server you might run on a computer or NAS device, you can’t arbitrarily update the server version. Instead, new Plex Media Server updates will be delivered by Western Digital in the control panel of the My Cloud Home.

Edit: removed sections not related to the topic

How do I access and/or view the updates on my control panel? All I have under my apps is the option to configure. Will it come through as a firmware update?

Updating an App

Use the following steps to update an app that you’ve added to your My Cloud device.

  1. On the Navigation bar, click Apps to display the Apps screen.
  2. If there is an update for one of the apps you’ve added to your device, an Updates available link appears at the top-right area of the screen.
  3. Click the Updates Available link to display the Updates Available screen.
  4. Select the app you’d like to update from the list and click Update.
    • If you’d like to view the details of the update, click Details.
    • Click Back to return to the Update screen.

I’ve also found this additional guide from within the Plex Forum on how to manually update. When doing so keep in mind that deleting/disabling Plex from within your control center will also remove the app data etc.:

Completely disregard my response. I was unaware you were running from a NAS. My bad.

Thank you so much. This worked like a charm and everything is now up to date. Next time I will make sure to specify that I am running it off of a NAS system in the beginning.
Thanks again!
