Manually updating Plex Media Server on MyCloud NAS

In the examples below it is a WD PR4100 but all manually installable models are similar. Thanks to @sa2000 for providing steps.

1. Download the update binary file either directly from https://plex.tv/downloads or using the link provided by Plex Web App as showing here

2. Then on the myCloud Dashboard, select Apps on the ribbon and then click on the Plex Media Server app showing in the installed apps list

In this example, version 1.6.1.3722 was the installed version, shown by the WD mycloud dashboard as 1613722.

3. Click on the Run App ON button to toggle the switch and stop the Plex Media Server application

4. Then click on Install an App Manually and locate the downloaded binary file for the new version of Plex Media Server

5. And click Open

It will now download the the new version into the NAS and apply the install

And will detect that there is already an installed version and will prompt with the following

6. Click ok to confirm

And the update will run

7. Refresh the installed apps screen and you will see new version 1.7.2.3878 in this example as installed and launched

8. Then go to Plex Web page eg http://mycloudpr4100:32400/web/index.html# select Settings / Server and and the new version will be seen as running

Worked exactly as posted!

Worked perfectly.

Thanks for steps, installed without problems.
One thing though, being short on HDD’s, when I was setting up my PR4100 I had to copy files from an external drive to PR4100 and then add another HDD to PR4100, copy more files, add another HDD, etc.

I did this 4 times to fill the slots in NAS, but, each time I added another drive, Plex app was still on machine, but I couldn’t access anymore from my web browser to configure… it said page was unavailable.
Each time I would have to reinstall Plex on NAS and then could access configuration… BUT, my libraries were gone and I had to setup libraries again,… ugh!

Any ideas? I’m wary that if I update Plex to a newer version, it may lose my databases and I will have to set the libraries up again each update? Or?

I tried manually installing Plex on my EX2100 that I downloaded off the website but it fails. From the apps section on my Nas I was able to install an older version. Now plex says that there is an update but I cannnot install it. The update just fails to install. It will say updating then error “Failed to install app”. I am following the above steps so I am not sure what the issue is.

I am having issues upgrading since 1.16.2.1297, I tried stopping, and not stopping the server on my PR4100, next step is to uninstall first… I am only afraid I will need to reconfigure it all!
