Server Version#: 1.31.3.6868
Player Version#: does not matter
I am trying to get this to upgrade, and realized I have no upgraded in a long time. So unsure if it is possibile to manually download upgrades to copy to the appropriate directory to take theupdate through I assume many steps to get up-to-date?
OR is it possible to rebuild a server and somehow import the data from the old server?? I am in the process of rebuilding a new server and hyper-v image for Plex.
What version of Windows are you running? Plex dropped Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 support last year, shortly after Microsoft themselves stopped supporting them*, so 1.31.3.6868 is the last version that will work with those operating systems.
* Windows still supports 2012 R2 if you have extended security updates, but as it was developed alongside Windows 8.1, Plex doesn’t support it.
Server 2012 on my old box, which is why I am rebuilding as a newer box 2022 server.
SO what would be the plan. for me? Move over the older installation and all it’s data/files, or somehow ‘fresh install’ the old one, then let it upgrade itself??

That’s what I’d recommend, assuming you want to keep all of your old data (e.g. ‘date added’ information, playlists, collections, and manually modified metadata). Following the instructions in the “move an install to another system” article above should be all that you need. If you wanted to, you could install 1.31.3 during the “Install Plex Media Server on the Destination System” step to ensure the new system starts out ~identical to your old server, then start updating once everything’s stable. Plex should handle updating your database gracefully if you initially install the latest version, but there have been a decent amount of changes to the database in the last ~year, so it wouldn’t hurt to first ensure everything’s running well on the same version before updating.
Thanks, biggest question would be how to get such an older version. I’ll see if my server still has that install, but I bet the original install I did was quite a bit older.
ya original install was 1.28.2.6151 and the problem is on the 64 bit machine, how would I get it to just upgrade to the 1.31.3 and not past it. I need it to be the same, then replace etc.
Thanks I had not noticed the links down at the bottom of article. Will I have problems going from say 32 bit version to 64 bit version in terms of DB storage etc?? I would like to just get up-to-date as I can
And I assume from the long list of things to do when moving a library around, if you have same path for libraries on old and new box, then a huge chunk of steps can be skiped right?
Hmm. Trying to figure out how to dup my data onto new box, but it seems I can only associate one server with my account? as soon as I login it shows the user list, then I select and it says not authorized.
I am trying to test set it up with the data from the old (32 bit) under new 64 bit to make sure it is browsable etc, before I gotoo crazy
Not true. You can have several servers. Plex is developed for this case.
As the linked article explains, you copy the Plex data folder to the new machine.
Make sure to use a regular NTFS volume as destination.
Do not use a volume that has been pooled or mirrored etc with Windows Storage Spaces.
Both “source” and “target” Plex servers must be stopped during the copy process.
I’ve used robocopy (several times already) with success for that.
(if the destination folder is not in the default location, you need to create a value in the registry, which points Plex server to the right folder. See [HowTo] An extended guide on how to move the Plex data folder on Windows )
Then you export the registry branch and import it on the new machine.
After doing so, you must never start the plex server on the old machine again!
Oh I have moved the data before so that part I know well.
But I am moving the older 1.31.3 version from 32 bit to 64 bit, is that supported? So basically old box is 32 bit on 2012, so locked to that max version. I’m installing the 64 bit version of same.
I was just trying to bring it up and make sure it was ‘ok’ before I start duplicating over the data etc.
So it sounds like maybe I can not copy over data/try/verify/make sure new server is all working, before I do it ‘for real’?? oh dang that’s a bit of a problem since I am trying to ‘try out’ plex in a hyper-v on this box vs in the host, which is why I was just trying to bring it up period, copy over a few files and test etc.
You can, but then your new server will have a new “identity”. Which means it may not appear in your Plex clients by default (but should be available under the sidebar’s MORE… mode), and the media shares you may have created for your friends & family will still point to the old server.
You do that by NOT importing the registry data of the old server.
You will very likely still have to perform Plex install fix for Windows Server (Claim issue)
I don’t know which version you are installing. I assumed 1.31 was the version on your old machine and you are trying to bring it up-to-date on the new one.
If you have a 64bit installer for 1.31, then yes, try this one for the migration.
OK I setup another account, and got it working ok, reverted VM, mostly just to test, if things stream ok from hyper-v and no big issues, we get the rest of things working and finally flip plex, thanks again for help!!
