Updated UX Design for Roku Version 6.6.8 is a step backwards

No need. Im just trying to understand the objections beyond it never used to be that way.
How things used to be (and how it used to be being the right way) was my point.

I recall a forum topic in the last month or so. Something to do with changes in the layout of shows/seasons/episodes/titles and a complaint about decreased usability on the Apple TV.

I’m not quite sure what you’re asking. Is ā€œpostā€ vs. ā€œthreadā€ important? I agree that these changes landed on the Apple TV first and didn’t generate as much discussion as here.

You said that you had no idea why people use shuffle. I was answering that question, not justifying it or comparing it to other options. In an absolute emergency I’m able to sleep, poorly, even without Plex!

The other thing I like about shuffle is that I don’t need to make a decision about where to start, or create a playlist in advance if I want ā€œlaterā€ episodes to be included, without running out of episodes and finishing the show.

It’s hardly important. I haven’t even used it for very long. But that’s why I like it.

I thought Juice’s comment WAS funny hyperbole, but borderline for the forum ā€œassume good intentā€ guidelines. My response was intended to be lighthearted sarcasm, calling out the absurdity of name-calling. I know better than to attempt sarcasm on the Internet. Apologies if it didn’t read that way - and to Juice, too. I should have just said so.

I’m pretty sensitive to logical fallacies and arguments that boil down to ā€œPlex is bad, so the company doesn’t careā€. I think it distracts strongly from the GOOD points people are making, that I often agree with, and makes it LESS likely that human beings on the other side will read them and say ā€œOh hey, good point, I want to work on this.ā€

It’s damned hard to work on things when your audience says ā€œYour art is ugly, and you’re clearly too stupid to listen to what your REAL customers want.ā€

What a great way to get pigeonholed into the ā€œvocal angry minorityā€.

At first I thought you were calling me sycophant/fanboy. I was confused and offended. Reading this a third-fourth-fifth time I think you’re saying that YOU don’t want to be called a sycophant or fanboy. If that’s the case, we’re on the same page.

If you think I’m a sycophant, that sucks. At least it’s a good word.

I agree with you about no/orange/triangle, for the vanishingly little that’s worth.

Ok to be clear.
I was definitely not calling you a sycophant.
I get we all all have different usage/preferences. Because I actually like or don’t hate ā€œsomeā€ of the Plex changes has meant I have been called a sycophant. My link was more a failed to attempt to disprove that.
Sadly I included the whole thing as a reply to you rather than just the relevant parts.
Almost all of what I said was meant generally rather than directly implied to you.
Definitely a ā€œmy badā€

No we’re good. Thanks for clarifying. I appreciate your response and approach in general.

I’m going to go hit ā€œshuffleā€ now…

To be fair my Roku is in a guest room.
I have a shield (seriously outdated UI) and a ATV 4K (which has the Roku UI exactly that you now see) for a few weeks now. It may even be the case that the Roku still has a few tweaks to go yet.
What I see on the ATV actually makes sense (at least to me.) To be fair when it first loaded i thought WTF!!

It just gets really tiresome when people repeatedly post that the Roku is (or at least was) the client UI all other clients strive to be, because they have used EVERY single client (apart from ones they haven’t.)

Either way back to r/plex on reddit.

Roku users once enjoyed the Roku UNO.
ATV Users once enjoyed The Roku UNO.
Now everyone gets to enjoy the Shield UNO.
Roku and ATV Users are the only ones who know how badly they got screwed.

The playing field has been leveled.

It was during the great Killing PMP forum meltdown when some hapless HTPC user called Elan ā€˜The Suit’. Well, if I had let that one go it would have been dereliction of duty on my part, so I invented ā€˜The Suit’ image. As I recall we all got a kick out of it - or at least I did…lol

This is what I came to complian about today. :slightly_smiling_face:
Actually I didn’t even notice ā€˜Watched episodes are greyed out with an orange line beneath them’, I just look for the orange triangle in the top corner of unwatched episodes.

Amen to this. We’re seeing the tendency throughout the digital world to user over sized images everywhere, now. I have no idea why. What could otherwise fit nicely on a single screen is being sprawled out, for no good reason, requiring users to scroll or swipe just to figure out what they’re looking at . When I encounter a web site with that type of design, I don’t even bother; I move on. It’s stupid. Talk about not being able to see the forest through the trees…

I like to shuffle things like The Big Bang Theory. A show that doesn’t really have a cohesive story to follow, or many two part episodes. Others would be Original Trek, or TNG, and some others that don’t have an arching narrative.

I really do like the TV show landing page with the seasons going across the screen and on the actual episode list with the seasons along the top. That’s often been a big gripe in my house – this is much easier for jumping around episodes across various seasons.

Most of the other changes are minor to me but I do agree with others that the biggest issue is the use of the screen real estate. On the TV show landing page, the episode screen and the main screen for a movie, there’s so much room off to the right of the description – just extending the field for the description out into that space would fill it and prevent all the descriptions from getting truncated. The episode screen especially – it literally only takes up half the vertical space.

FANART

Firstly, is it just me or do we now have fanart on Roku?
I do not recall this before and for me is a HUGE leap forward, I just wish they could cycle in the background
.

Season tabs
This seems like an improvement

Watched Markers
As many have said this needs addressing to be easier to use, the old marker was quite good

Synopsis
Both the navigation (you have to navigate through this to get to other common controls) and the location/size need addressing

I think the new look is fantastic. Background images are back again (which i really missed), the posters are larger , as for the bookmarked watched / unwatched episodes now being changed i will get used to that in no time. The only thing i would like personally is for the background images to be like they used to be a coupla years ago (solid) and not so light (transparent) but hey thats just me :). Thanks Plex team and please don’t change it back, some of us actually DO like change

I agree I would like the fanart to be more visible.

First, thanks for continuing to develop the app. Users might not always agree with the changes, but I think it’s good that it’s not sitting around ignored.

Like others, I also would like to see return of the orange triangle for unwatched episodes, and the full orange bar gone from watched episodes. The problem is that orange is a bright color and draws attention. We don’t want attention drawn to the watched episodes. Having an orange bar on a partially watched episode is something you do want to draw attention to. I also would like to see the Watched/Unwatched terminology returned in place of the newer Played/Unplayed verbiage.

And I’m not seeing a way to get into the stream settings, that allows choosing playback quality and switching between audio and subtitle streams, before starting playback. There used to be a button to open that. Now, I have to start the playback, pause it, and go into the settings.

Agreed. And Orange Underline is already used throughout the app for exactly that purpose. The currently selected Season, at the top of the screen, gets an Orange Underline.

That’s still there. It’s under the ā€œā€¦ Moreā€ button. That’s been one of the other big complaints - that there’s room, but ā€œless usedā€ functions have been hidden.

I checked again and I see ā€œPlayback Settingsā€ in the More section for a movie, but not for a TV show.

100% agree - new GUI is terrible!

So I experienced the Shuffle complaint that some are having for episodes. It seems odd that it’s nested under ā€œMoreā€ā€¦

In my use case scenario, I only found two more options nested under ā€œMore.ā€ Remove the actual ā€œMoreā€ button, and you’re left with only adding another button where there’s clearly enough room to do so.

If it has to do with playback functionality, it should be on the surface. If it’s navigation, (like Go To Show or something) then it could probably reside under ā€œMore.ā€ if we’re looking for a litmus test.

After more testing, when I open up a show, the main screen has ā€œPlay Next Episodeā€, ā€œMark as Playedā€, and ā€œMoreā€. This screen doesn’t have ā€œPlayback Settingsā€ in ā€œMoreā€. If I open up a specific season, the ā€œMoreā€ menu contains ā€œPlayback Settingsā€.
